Inexpensive York Accommodation
 

My 19 year old son and I will be spending one night in York in mid-June. We're trying to keep costs down so I looked at the Travelodge website as well as the one for the hostel. But I'd really like to go with a B&B if we can find one that isn't too expensive. Preferably less than $125 for both of us.

We're planning to take the train to Edinburgh in the morning so would like to be able to get a good breakfast at our lodging rather than having to drag our luggage around looking for a place to eat. But we're not looking for anything fancy. Just clean, comfortable and convenient to the train station and the sights of the city.

Can anyone recommend such a place?

The YHA in York includes breakfast in the price, if that helps.

And thank you too, Lee Ann. I haven't looked at the hostel website since I posted about lodging a couple of weeks ago. But the Rick Steve's book I was just looking at said they didn't serve breakfast. So I believed them without double checking it. I need to go back to that website and, as you suggested on my London thread, e-mail them directly about the possibility of a twin room.

However, I would still love to hear from anyone who's stayed in a B&B in York that wasn't expensive.

We are booked at the Abbeyfields Guest House in York for two nights in August. The per night charge during the week is 36GBP per person / per night. With today's exchange rate that is $108 / night. Fri and Sat nights are 41 GBP per pp/pn which is still only $123.

Les and Al Edington are extremely prompt at returning emails, often within the same hour if sent in the morning. No deposit is required.

The one problem we did run into at several other B&Bs was the requirement to stay for more than one night. Good luck with your search.

There is a 'destination expert' for York itself called Ange and she is an absolute mine of information about accommodation in the city, so do either contact her by posting a question or sending her a private message (you have to be registered with the site to do this) or look through previous posts. She has helped many many people with a similar query to yours.

I stayed at the Sycamore in the Botham gate area. The area is delightful and most convenient to the Minster.

And thank you for your link and info, Barbara. The price is definitely good and it's a shorter walk from the train station than the one I heard from this morning.

In 2005 I stayed at the St. Raphael Guest House for 30-something GBP per night, en suite (I was traveling alone). I found it clean, comfortable, and pleasant, with excellent hosts and breakfast. The location is a few blocks outside the medieval walls, and an easy walk from the train station.

Don't know about current prices, etc., but give it a look (it's at 44 Queen Anne's Road), and enjoy York!

Unfortunately, although it looks great and has a great price, the St Raphael Guest House is one of the ones that requires a three night minimum stay.

Unfortunately, Abbeyfields doesn't have a twin room. But I did hear back from one I'd contacted through a Rick Steve's link that has an opening. Though it's a 15 minute walk from the train (we're going to be traveling light though anyway). And I'm going to contact the Sycamore. I'm hoping to get this nailed down today or tomorrow.

Just returned yesterday. On my trip I spent 3 nights in York. A short search should provide you with tons of options in your price range. I stayed at St. Mary's hotel a 4 star B&B, not to be confused with 23 St. Mary's which I know nothing about. With luggage I would't walk it, but I travel very light with a gym bag and taking the back way, a 10 minute walk from the station, and another 10 minutes to town center. Great breakfast.

They don't seem to have minimum stay requirement (at least midweek), and do have twin rooms. It's in Bootham area, just north of the Minster. £25 to £30 pernight per person, so well within your budget.

I have used smoothhound for booking accommodation in York - they tend to be in the Bootham Park area - which is quite near the Minster and attractions. Good luck.

Thank you, Roger, Alec and Steve! I'm sorry it took me so long to respond. I'm kind of losing it here, trying to deal with making reservations in three different places plus figuring out dates and plane tickets! 8-}

I've e-mailed a few places and, based on those responses plus one I'm still waiting for, I've narrowed it down to two places; The Sycamore and Number 34 York. I'm really hoping to reserve at one or the other today.

Again, I really appreciate all of the help I've gotten here.
