Inexpensive place to stay in or near Zurich?

We would be willing to stay on the outskirts if it's near the train and not too far from town but we thought we'd be staying with friends who now can't accomodate us so we are past our budget for this protion of our trip.
We just want the place to be clean

I have a favorite that's in Kuesnacht on Lake Zurich about 10 minutes by train or S-bahn from the city. But it's waaay more than clean! It's a fabulous place!

The hotel is the Seehotel Sonne (www.sonne.ch), and as you exit the Kuesnacht train station, go straight down the street and under the overpass to cross the busy road. As you exit the underpass, you'll be at the entrance to the Sonne!

I have stayed in Kuesnacht several times to visit a friend who lives nearby, but only once have I stayed at the Sonne. I fell in love with it! It's so convenient, the staff is very friendly (actually flirty), very helpful, and young. I also love the garden restaurant overlooking the lake.

There are several direct (0 changes) trains from Kuesnacht to the airport in the morning. I usually have to catch a morning flight and get to the airport at about 08.00 easily.

If that hotel is too pricey, I also enjoyed the Hirschen am See in Obermeilen (www.hirschen-meilen.ch), but it's farther from Zurich and not quite so convenient (either a 10-minute walk or a short bus ride from the train station).

Good luck!

Welcome Inn in Kloten is nice, clean. Also modern, oriented toward people arriving/departing the airport. Quite near the Kloten station, direct line into downtown Zurich.

All of the suggested hotels seems to be around 150 CHF for a double room. For that price youcould stay at Hotel Bristol, right in Zürich, two blocks from the main train station and a short walk from the oldtown area.
It won't be as charming as the lovely hotels suggested by Swandav2000, but it might be more convenient if that is the goal.

Hi - I stayed at the Hotel Arlette and it was pretty inexpensive. Nice, clean and on a quiet street. A couple blocks to the train station. I don't know if they have a website but they are on booking sites. I think I faxed them to book directly with the hotel. A couple years ago it was 110 CH for a single, and they have air conditioning.

You can read about it here:

This website lists many of the hotels in Zurich so it might be helpful if this one isn't what you are looking for.

Jes, just returned last week from Switzerland -- last night in Zurich. I went on Priceline and got the 4* Intercontinental. Bid $80 and ended up paying $91.82 (with taxes & fees). It was 1 and 1/2 block from the trolley to the downtown main train station. It was a great deal.

All I can add is to try the bnb.ch website for possible bed&breakfast places nearby. J.
