We've stayed at the Hotel de la Motte Picquet both times we were in Paris and been very happy.

It's a small (18 rooms I think) hotel very near the Eiffel Tower, on the corner of Avenue de la Motte Picquet and Rue Cler which is a pedestrian market street.

The upper level rooms are less noisy which is a point to consider since Ave. de la Motte Picquet is a busy street.

A word of caution - The first room we had on our second trip was unacceptable in our opinion. You could not be in the bathroom with the door closed because it was so small. So, you basically were using the toilet right in the middle of your bedroom. I can't remember what the room number was, but try to get details on your room before committing. A room with bath will have a larger bathroom than a room with shower in general, and the bathtubs are nice.

Prices have gone up here over the last few years, though. Last year we paid 90 euros/night and two years ago it was more like 75. The minimum rate for 2 people now seems to be 129.

Also, we never bothered with the breakfast for 10 euros per person. There is a wonderful bakery on Rue Cler where you can get your beignets and croissants or whatever you like, plus a fruit stand and a small grocery store.

I stayed at the Grand Hotel Leveque on Rue Cler (not far from the Eiffel Tower). I would definately stay there again!

I stayed at the Hotel du Palais Bourbon near les Invalides for 65 euros, including breakfast, in October 2003. The single room had a bathroom with a shower( soap and a wash cloth, too, which small French hotels often do not provide, no shampoo), telephone and TV. Larger rooms cost more, of course, but check out their website. The hotel is near 4 metro stations and bus #69 which will take you to most places of interest.

Here is another inexpensive hotel in Paris. Last year I paid 55 euro a night at the Hôtel Jean Bart about two blocks west of the Luxembourg Garden and the petit déjeuner was included. I don't think they have a web site and you will have to call for reservations. I hope you speak French, there is a good chance you will not speaking to someone who speaks English.

The hotel is old and dated, but it was clean. I had a double bed and a bath with shower. The room was not large, but typical in size for two star hotels in Paris. They also have a couple small rooms with one single bed, but I do not know what they charge for these.

I heard about this hotel from a French teacher who uses this hotel when he take some of his students to Paris.

My Mom and I stayed at Hotel Les Argonautes in the 5th (Latin Quarter) in late September. We paid €71 for a double w/ private bath.

Fair warning: Les Argonautes is located on a street that can be noisy (lots of restaurants and tourists) until well into the night . . . so if you're a light sleeper, this may not be the place for you. I slept fine, but a thundering herd of elephants could run through my room and I'd still sleep fine. :) My mom, on the other hand, had some problems sleeping.

BUT it's also about 200 yards from Notre Dame and the Seine (you can see the river if you are in a room that has a window that opens on to the street) and about 75 yards from the St. Michel metro stop. VERY well located, IMHO. Also, the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Has anyone heard of or stayed at Hotel Fromentin in Montmarte? Just getting antsy. First trip to Paris this Christmas.

For a first trip to Paris, I wouldn't recommend Montmartre - too far out from the center of the city and some potential for novices to wander into nearby seedy areas. Stick to the 1st through 8th arrondissements until you get to know the city better.

In the 6th is Hotel St Andre des Arts - great location, includes breakfast but no TV or lift. In the 7th is Hotel du Champs de Mars, just off Rue Cler - great hotel but now almost impossible to book thanks to Rick making it so popular. In the 5th I have just booked myself in Hotel St Jacques and am very excited as it looks great but I haven't actually stayed there yet (next trip is in march). You can find all of these hotels on the web (easiest way is a google search). I don't think St Andre has it's own web site but it's on a couple of the big sites (france-hotel-guide.com; 123france.com). I've also stayed at the Minerve on rue des ecoles in the 5th which was about 83 euro double two years ago but I think it may have gone up. Same owners have the Famila next door which I think might be cheaper.

I really wouldn't recommend Montmartre for a first-timer, either, but probably even more not in winter.

Minerve and Familia are about the same rates -- Familia a couple euro cheaper in some categories (regular double 90 vs. 93 at Minerve). they have their own website now which is rather snazzy.

I think there are so many cheap Paris hotels, it's hard to focus on one until you kind of decide what area you want to stay. I've thought www.eurocheapo.com has some good listings and information, but so do other webs sites like that mentioned above. It really depends what kind of area you want, also, as the Muguet is fine for a cheap hotel, but I wouldn't recommend that area as what many people want.

Do you know if the Familia has a lift. It certainly looks nice. I stayed at St. Jacques in Oct., which is just a couple doors up from there, so I know the location is great. Also, I wonder how noisy the rooms on the street are.

Hmmmm....We're going to be staying in the 13th, near Place de Italie. Does that seem too far out of the mainstream for two middle-agish first timers? (We love to walk and will only be a block from the metro...)

check hotel d'etoile maillot...it is in a quiet neighborhood but just steps to a metro and walkable to many sights. we have been very happy there twice in the last few years.

Allisomn, I don't think that Place de Italie is that far out. I have a friend who stayed there last year and she was quite happy with the location. She stayed at the Hôtel Sunny Mouffetard near the metro Les Gobelins. If the metro line near your hotel is line 7, it would take you directly in to the heart of the city. I would not be concerned about the location.

Barb: the Familia does have a lift, one of those typical teeny-tiny ones! DH and I stayed at the Familia for almost two weeks a couple of years ago. We were very happy with it. Our room faced a small courtyard in the back so it was very quiet. Not sure about street facing rooms. The whole place was impeccably clean and quiet charming considering the low price.

If you are going to stay there and must, then you will probably be fine, but I really would not recommend a hotel around place d'Italie. It's not very charming, shall we say. It's not terribly far out, that isn't the problem so much as the general area. On the other hand, I think the area around Gobelins metro is pretty good. Even though it's not that awfully far from place d'Italie, I think they are very different areas in a lot of ways. I like the area around Gobelins, particularly because just a block or two north you get some nice small shops and cafes, St Medard church and the beginning of rue Mouffetard. There are also some nice cafes right around Gobelins metro. I don't like the area around place d'Italie. If you can change, I personally would.

Allisonm - I agree that it isn't too far out. I walked from the Monge to there a couple of times. AND you are close to the metro. Enjoy!

On my last trip to Paris I stayed at the Hotel du Palais Bourbon and loved it. It was convenient, inexpensive, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I will definitely stay there again on my next visit!

i just stayed at the grand hotel malher in the marais. it was about E108 for a double room. very convenient to the metro st. paul and good walking to notre dame. it also has a lift, if that is an issue...

Wow! I haven't been able to log on for only two days and I am overwhelmed by the number of responses! Thank you all SO much for taking the time.

I am doing this on a whim, first trip on my own, and I speak no French at all! I am doing some research now on Paris (locations, geography, hotels,etc. and greatly appreciate the guidance of websites and hotels!!) All that has been suggested previously is to stay in the Latin Quarter. I'm looking for a hotel preferable in the $100 range ($85ish Euro, though I'll go up to 110 euro if needed.)

Maybe I should throw this out there too.. I'm 32, single, and looking for an area walkable to the sights. I'm a "relax with a nice glass of wine" girl, and not so much a "barhopper" anymore. I'm not sure what areas would be best, though I'm doing my homework now (did I say I'm doing this on a whim?!) Any opinions would be wonderful. Thanks to all of you again!!

If you are 32, single and want to walk to the sights, try Hotel La Sorbonne. It's right across the street from the Sorbonne University and the students and professors all hang out in the square around the corner from the hotel so you could meet some people without barhopping.

It's not a great hotel, but it's clean, the staff speaks English, there's an elevator and a 5 euro breakfast and it's 80 euros a night for a double. Don't know what a single is but it would be less. The rooms are tiny but you can walk to all the major sights except possibly the Eiffel Tower unless you really like walking. There are 3 Metro stops nearby and you can take the RER from CDG right to the Luxembourg Station and it's 2 blocks from the hotel.

This is NOT a luxury hotel but they are very nice there. I just thought you might meet some young people near the university.

Thansk SalB! I'll look into it. Definitely want to be in a quaint area that's walkable to the main sites.. never been to paris before! I'm going over Christmas so I'm finding availability an issue, but I'll look into all the recommendations I get and I'm sure one will work out. Are there certain sections of paris people would recommend? Thanks.

This might be the place to ask, (maybe clouclou?) - - twice in long years past, we stayed at a two-star called "Londres et Stockholm" on Rue St. Roch not far from the church and only a couple of blocks from rue Rivoli -- pardon spelling errors. Has the name changed? Vanished? We enjoyed our stays there, and I'm curious about how it has faired since then. J.
