Inexpensive Hotels in Italy

I am looking for budget accomodations (under $50 for double) in Nice, Rome, Florence, and Venice. We were considering staying in Hostels, but it seems like for not too much more you can get a private room with a bathroom for just a little bit more. Any advise on which is better, hostels or cheap hotel, would be grealy appreciated.

I stayed at Pensione Sole while in Florence in 1993. It is clean and within your budget. I found most of my hotel info in Frommer's, Fodor's or Let's Go books. The hotel address is via del Sole, 8 (3rd floor) 50123 Firenze. tel. 055/239-6094. Good luck

Hi, not sure if you mean $50 total or $50 each person but I have been looking for cheaper lodgings than what the tour books show for 4 people (2 adults, 2 teens) and learned most hotels in Europe have a max of 3 to a room. Then I saw an ad for Holiday Inns of Europe. I booked 4 nightes in Rome at a Garden style hotel for $113 a night for 2 double beds and a maximum of 4 people. (Germany was only $80)!! If you find better let me know. We will be there mid-August
