Inexpensive hotel/pensione in Taormina?.....
.....or am I just dreaming? Help!

How cheap do you want a hotel? This seems like a really nice hotel.
http://www.belsoggiorno.com/eng.htm'and it's not expensive.

Inexpensive yes I know of one that could work if you can put up with some incoveniences. We've stayed twice at the Villa Chiara (a one star). On our first visit, we thought it was okay although the shower is a nuisance...just a showerhead on the wall, a shower curtain and a drain in the floor.

But we liked the location the first time (on Via Don Bosco just up a set of stairs off Corso Umberto) and the price was great for Taormina. However, this time we found the bed to be VERY uncomfortable and my husband and I woke up with backaches each morning. Maybe some of the rooms have better mattresses - I didn't remember the bed being so uncomfortable our first stay.

The positives are the low prices (it was ~75 Euro/night in June this year) a good location, decent sized room, great a/c (8 Euro extra), and very clean.

Someone posted a great recommendation for this B&B not too long ago. I didn't see the prices listed, but they have an email address. Take a look, then do a search on this board for the recommendation.
http://www.pensionesvizzera.com/NDefault_Ing.htm
Thank you all very much! What great tips! I'm traveling alone so I didn't want to spend more than 80 or so euro. Thank you!

Here's a partial repost of my trip report from May.

Our hotel in Taormina was the Pensione Svizzera. It is not far from the bus station but as we approached I wondered if I had made the right choice. The building doesnt look like much from the street, plain and small. We went down the steps to the entrance and all changed as we descended. The steps take you to a pleasant garden and the entrance to the hotel and it kept getting better and better. The hotel has been recently remodeled and is immaculately clean. The room we had was spacious and had a private terrace with table and chairs. The bathroom was also large and fully equipped. The view was not as spectacular as in other hotels I am sure but the general condition and efficient manner in which it is run makes up for that as does its convenient location. Their rooms that have a sea view have a small balcony or none at all depending on floor. The breakfast area has glass walls that look out to the sea and up to Castelmola. Breakfast can also be taken in the garden if you wish. A complete selection in the European style is available and service is pleasant. This was the nicest of the three hotels in which we stayed and the value for price cant be beat, ? 88 with a 7% discount for cash. I highly recommend the Svizzera.

In 1999 we stayed at the 2* Hotel Corona, Via Roma 7, Ph:39-942-23021; Fax 39-942-23022. It looks like the rates are currently E48 to 86 for a single. It is a boxy hotel with no particular character, not that well maintained, unfriendly day manager, inedible breakfast - but in spite of all that we would gladly stay there again because of the location and the view from our balcony. The other hotels in the area are very pricey and have no better views. It is at the bottom of the town (a few minutes walk from the busy Corso) right across from the beautiful Public Gardens and very close to a number of excellent inexpensive restaurants in a very nice quiet neighborhood. Via Roma is a main street but we were not really even aware of it from our room and it wasn't a problem at all for us.
