Inexpensive, good location hotel needed ASAP for Berlin next week?

I have pored over previous posters advice on past stays at their Berlin hotel but alot is recommended when the weather is nice/warmer.Two "twentysomething" friends have decided to go to Berlin next week for 5 days and 4 nights and would appreciate any recommendations given. I had told them that I would help but have not been there in over 30 years so have been overloaded in looking on Fodors. They are into history, dining and any sightseeing. Thanks for any help!

I really liked the Hotel Augusta, right off the Ku'damm on Fasanenstrasse (if you want to be in the very commercial heart of the former West Berlin), a short walk from the Zoo Bahnhof train station. It was 85 euro a night in the high season, and a comfortable 3-star.
The websites http://www.booking.com and http://www.venere.com seem to have a really good selection of berlin hotels in all price ranges.

We really liked the Hotel Pension Begrenz, which was about 75 euros per night. The room was very nice and quite roomy. The pension was well-situated near public transportation, and we had an excellent dinner at an Italian restaurant called La Vigna, which was right down the street.

It's a family-run type of place.

A possibility: The BW Hotel Prtesident on An der Urania. Two blocks from the KaDeWe and the U-Bahn; short walk to the zoo area and the K-dam; included buffet breakfast is extensive.

Have stayed three times in the past and never been disappointed but it is NOT in Mitte so if they are insistent on staying in that part of the city this will not work for them.

Try http://www.accorhotels.com and do a search for Berlin and their dates.
The problem is that the displayed price for the resulting hotels may be more or less than they will have to pay. So they have to click through each one to see what the price will be, and the prepaid price is usually considerably cheaper.

Also try these sites:
http://www.booking.com
http://www.laterooms.com
http://www.lastminute.com (UK side)

For quality and location, I can't imagine anything better than Hotel Astoria in the Zoo area. It is less than 100 Euros and the included breakfast is amazing. Down comforters, great concierge service....check out the hotel link in my Berlin trip report.

If you want to try out a funky and arty hotel (at the very least, check out its website and imagine spending a night in some of the stranger rooms), go to http://www.propeller-island.com

We stayed there in June 2004 and quite liked it. Our room was about 100 euros, but I think there are some that are a little less expensive and they probably have a winter sale on. The location is central in West Berlin, a few blocks away from a metro stop.
