Inexpensive Country
 

What is the most inexpensive country to visit, food, hotels, etc? Airfare not a problem, we will be using our air miles. Planning a trip the end of April. Thanks.

The end of April 2006 with ff miles and you don't have a seat yet? Will there be seats open?

sue6...may I suggest Romania/Bulgaria for the best bang for the dollar anywhere in Europe. I'm an old time traveler in that area, having just escorted a group there as recent as October. Hotels, other lodgings, inter-city transportation, car rentals, restaurants, etc...no comparison. For sheer natural beauty, unspoiled forests, mountains, lakes, streams and villages...your best bet in Eastern Europe. I can recommend guides, hotels, etc. if you wish. And yes, Americans are welcomed....in fact Romania just arranged two very favorable airbase leases for USA.

I don't get planning a trip just cause it's cheap but here is my advice, for starters: You must go to a non-Euro country. Personally, I would go to Argentina or Asia if I were you.

Which continent? Are you limiting the selection to Europe?

What are your interests?

Turkey has wonderful ruins and a terrific coastline.

Slovakia is very middle Europe and not much visited. Prices are very reasonable.

In fact, out in the country and away from the large cities, a number of Middle European countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, etc) have much to offer and prices are still very reasonable.

Even in the Western European countries, if you choose to stay in pensiones you could get away with $70-$80 a night for two. Rick Steves and Lonely Planet have some excellent budget suggestions.

I think you can go almost anywhere in Europe if you budget carefully enough. We found Germany to be fairly inexpensive compared to other European countries, especially in the countryside where we can rent cheap (but very nice) apartments and shop for groceries.

That being said, I agree with the others; you may want to look into a non-Euro or non-pound country. Cesky Krumlov, in southern Czech, was very nice and inexpensive, as were the small parts of Slovenia and Slovakia that we were in.

I agree with Germany and Slovenia. Surprisingly you can stay very reasonably at guesthouses all over these countries with the added bonus that you don't really need reservations. Rent a car in Frankfurt (which is not really badly priced) and hit the BACK roads of central and southern Germany.

This is supposed to be a secret ;-) Now you're telling it to everybody and soon we'll have rip-off prices there too...

Next thing you'll tell them were to find new, clean 20€/night rooms incl. breakfast in Austria too.

Morocco. I would go there for a vacation over any other place I have visited.

I totally agree with Morocco - gorgeous country, wonderful scenery, lovely people, fabulous food - and cheap!

I guess Sue6 is after recos for Europe, but when I read StCirq's description of Morocco ("gorgeous country, wonderful scenery, lovely people, fabulous food - and cheap!") I couldn't help thinking that it was a perfect description of Vietnam.

I assume you are referring to Europe since this is posted on this board. I don't know about your FF miles, but I would guess it might be Albania.

Not that I would recommend going to some place just because it is cheap. Some places are cheap because no one would want to be there.

I guess I should have explained myself a little better. We have traveled a lot in Europe, Italy, France, Spain, Scotland, Ireland, England, Germany also Turkey and Prague. We don't want to go just anywhere because it's inexpensive but this year we do need to go on a tighter budget. We would still like to have 3 star accomodations and GOOD food, maybe too much to ask for. We have been to Costa Rica but no where else in South America or Asia. Thanks for all the input and would welcome anymore suggestions.

Why not give Portugal a try? If you go to the Portugal threads, you will find that not only is it a very beautiful country with beaches, and mountains and every thing in between, but it is also known as being one of the most reasonable places(cost wise). I lived there as a child and have spent the last 30 years dreaming of returning and I will be in June.

And you will be most welcomed too.
