Independant touring from Marmaris north?
2 adults three kids (11,11,13) Is it feasible to hire a car, get a good guide book and "do" the sites from Marmaris , incl, Ephesus,Pammukale, and north to Gallipoli and then onto Istanbul?

Mark,
If you start your trip from Marmaris, Drive to Pamukkale on the way you can visit Afrodisias and stay overnight in Pamukkale would be Richmond hotel (www.richmondhotel.com) Marmaris Pamukkale is almost 250 KM,then second day you can drive to Selcuk to see Ephesus Pamukkale to Selcuk is almost 175 KM you can stay in Selcuk or Kusadasi 25 KM from Selcuk. After Ephesus you can drive to Pergamum then to Troia and Gallipoli BUT THIS ROAD IS LITTLE BIT LONG so when you finish you visit Pergamum and Troia you may stay in Canakkale then drive to Istanbul via Gallipoli.
From Kusadasi to Canakkale is almost 400 KM
From Canakkale to Istanbul via Gelibolu( gallipoli ) 300 KM
If you have more information please don't hesitate to write me to:

Do I need a guide at the sites ,or can we work it out ourselves (not being total dummies ). What about hiring a driver/guide will the extra expense be negated by the convenience/comfort factor ?

Marko,
Turkey has many ruins, if you are interested in Archaelogy YOU MUST hire a guide or driver & guide this is not coast you alot. I have guide friend in Istanbul if you want you can write him. his e-mail is [email protected]
To hire a driver & guide will be a good idea because 2 reason.
1) They know how to drive and whow to go so you have change to see more place in small time.
2) They know history archaelogy about the place you will go, BUT if you want to hire a guide PLEASE CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE. Because I know alot of guides who doesn't know anything about the history and archaelogy otherwise you waste your money.
To start your trip from Antalya would be great idea IF you have time. IF YOU HAVE MORE TIME I recommend you CAPPADOCIA too maybe away of Antalya as route but worth to see especially children BUT YOU HAVE TO REDESIGN YOUR TRIP.

In 1994 we hired a car in Antalya... taking some side trips from there... and then worked our way up the coast. Can't remember everything.. but Kas, Kalkan were favorites..Ephesus of course... Pergamon.. We dropped the car in Bursa and took a hydrofoil to Istanbul. Whether you need a guide or not depends on how willing you are to do your homework! Can't recall we had a guide anyplace. Tho at Epesus it might be a plus.

Renting a car and driving to Izmir is in my opinion the only way to go. When you get into the cities/towns it can get a little hairy but if you stay focused it should go ok. Make sure you get decent car - Newer model and make sure you figure out the drop off charge. This can be very expensive (double the rental cost) and mysteriously appear. Check kemwel out of the US. They were great and by far the best price. I can't comment on Izmir to Istanbul portion. We flew and it was reasonable. The country has half price one way fares.
