Incredible Coincidence in Dubrovnik
 

What are the chances..... I signed into this computer in an internet cafe in Dubrovnik and when I tried to log into Fodors I found out the last person had not logged out.... Crazymina!

If I may make such a bold statement.... why is everyone wasting time and money on the Amalfi Coast? Dubrovnik is FANTASTIC. The Hotel Villa Argentina is easily the nicest place I have ever stayed in Europe with my own, very nice tile balcony overlooking the sea, a kingsize SOFT bed, luxury amenities and the view is to die for.

It's a little hard to get here, and my cabin on the ferry (22 hours from Rijeka) truly felt like a coffin. I couldn't turn out the light for fear that I would think I had died. But Croatia is an amazing place.

Glad you're enjoying Croatia. There is a bar which is located outside the Old Town walls (you can see it when walking the Old Town walls), on the Adriatic side, called Buza - you have to walk through a small opening and down some stairs - it's a fantastic ramshackled bar with a great view of the Adriatic and an ambience that is pure bliss. The views looking north towards the Old Town are fantastic. How was Rijeka?

Aha, thanks, Mark, we could not remember the name of that bar. The only sign we saw said Cold Drinks, Great View! We had our first pivo there!

We had originally considered the ferry to Dubrovnik from Rijeka, now am glad we flew in. Hope you enjoy Dubrovnik as much as we did, Grasshopper. If you get a chance, head over to Cavtat. We really enjoyed that day trip.

NancyB - are you going to Croatia again this summer?

I can't remember how many times I stopped at Buza in the afternoon - one time I even brought figs and smoked dalmatian ham with me.

Grasshopper-I hear that the Dubrovnik is awesome. Did you make your own arrangements? How many days would you or anyone recommend?

"Jadrolinija" is started with summer timeptable which means much frequently departures from Dubrovnik to Rijeka and Bari ( 4 times to Rijeka and 2 to Bari ). www.jadrolinija.hr.

P.S. Grasshopper...have you hiked up to the cross yet? Great views from up there, and worth it!

As a town, Dubrovnik has always looked wonderful (CrazyMina, I loved your photos!) and I'm glad you're loving it, and your hotel.

Is there a scenic coastal road nearby similar in beauty to the Amalfi Coast road?

Just a few very quick answers. I am not spending nearly enough time in Dubrovnik.. only 4 nights. I should have arranged a week.

Capo, amazing coastal drives. And the views are fantastic. Prices much cheaper than Amalfi.

No hike to the cross, Mina. I took an excursion to Montenegro, tomorrow the wine region.

I also spent a week in Rovinj. Very nice but glad it does not have to follow Dubrovnik.

Mark, Rijeka was very industrial and hot and smelly. The ferry ride was actually fun. I met some great folks.

Back to the work of travelling. Ciao to all.

My mistake Grasshopper - I meant Rovinj - which looks to be picturesque. Why are you glad it didn't follow Dubrovnik?

Thanks, Grasshopper. I'm sure that Dubrovnik would get a lot more tourists if it was closer to a large and popular city like Rome.

Grasshopper - what's the weather like over there now? Is it warm enough to go swimming?

Mark: I've been to both Rovinj and Dubrovnik. Rovinj really is incredible. Tiny cobblestone winding streets. I would highly recommend visiting it. There were a lot more tourists in Rovinj compared to Dubrovnik when I was there. I do however personally like the beaches the farther south you go.

My parents got engaged at that cross on the hill. I believe its called Srd.

They dragged me & my sister up there when we were teens to see the view. Sooo romantic (although I hated it at the time!)

I went to Dubrovnik in about 1989. I would love to know how it has changed it that time. That was before the conflicts over there.

This is great! Two Fodor regulars from different parts of the country (I assume) and a crossing of paths in Dubrovnik. I remember some years ago dreaming of visiting a walled city and thought Dubrovnik would be just perfect. At the time, I thought the ideal would be a Med Cruise on a ship I think was called the Golden Odyssey. These many years later I have lost my enthusiasm for cruising for the most part because of the change in size of the ships, sameness, etc., but would still love to visit Dubrovnik. I was heartsick during the conflict there and seeing the damage inflicted on TV. I'm so glad things have returned pretty much to normal.

Who knows maybe we'll go there one day and find some trace of Grasshopper. Enjoy your trip; sounds as if you are having a wonderful time. I'm interested in your thoughts about the wine country, since we both live so close to wine country here in the Bay Area.
