The portico is open when the church is open; that's how you enter the church. When I was there the mouth of truth was accessible.

Thanks Adrienne! Kind of silly but fun. Gregory Peck's apartment at Via Margutta happens to be on the same street I booked the hotel on, so I took that as an omen.

In recent years there have been looooong lines of tourists waiting to stick their hands in the mouth and take a pic.

If you do go make sure you go inside the church. It's really pretty and quite different from most churches in Rome. And unlike the portico with the mouth, the church itself delightfully uncrowded.
