In Slovenia: Trieste vs. Piran- Where to Stay?

My wife and I will be visiting Slovenia next summer and will be spending a few days on the coast. Is it better to stay in Piran or in Trieste, Italy? How do they compare as far as general atmosphere, proximity to other sites and beaches, quality of hotels and restaurants, and any other intangibles? We will have a car. Thanks for any advice.

Haven’t been to Trieste, but we spent a couple of days in Piran a few months ago. They are very different, Trieste a bigger city, Piran a small town that you can explore on foot in one day. Its center is pedestrian only.

We stayed at hotel Piran which we liked (great breakfast buffet) and found the restaurants in Piran very good, too. However, I think you might have more choices of hotels in Trieste. We always prefer smaller towns, so choosing was not an issue. What “sites” do you want to be close to?

The beach in Piran is not sand, but I think Portoroz has a man-made beach, and definitely lots of bigger hotels with more amenities. So I guess in the end it depends on what you are looking for and how long you are staying.

I suggest either Piran or Portoroz, which has more hotels.
They are only about 3 miles apart.

I suggest Slovenian Adriatic coast. Why? Swimming is the much better in Slovenia, more clean sea water. Hotels in Slovenia are more famous that Trieste one and most of them provide wellness&spa facilities. Many of them located at the coast line also offer casino. You should also visit Lipica (http://www.epiceco-hotels.com/en/tourist-spots/#Lipica) with its unique stud farm, which is only 30 km away from Portoroz. And of course Postojna cave (cave system with its inner unique train).

Trieste is dying city, but have few interesting points as Castle Miramare and Riva. I recommended Piran and you can easily visit all coast from Trieste to Croatia.
