In need of: nice budget hotel in London
Hello, just joined this forum!
I am planning a trip with my boyfriend to London and Paris for this October. We will be in London for two nights and Paris for five nights. I already have a great hotel secured in Paris (Hotel Chopin on the Passage Jouffroy), but am lacking in London. I'm getting very frustrated looking for decent, affordable lodging in London.
Since we will only be there for two nights, I would like the hotel to be relatively centrally located to the major attractions. We would also like a private room with private facilities. Small and plain is just fine, as long as it's affordable and clean. We're looking to spend under $130 each night. Any tips or suggestions you have would be great! Thanks.

The best hotel deal in London is Priceline. You can typically get a 4* hotel for $80 - $120 per night and a 5* for $120 - $150 pr night.
You need to do a lot of research on the www.biddingfortravel.com website before bidding, but that's where you'll get the most or your money. To stay centrally located, stick to the Mayfair, Westminster or Kensington areas. And I would avoid bidding any lower than a 4* hotel.

I was just checking our Priceline this morning! I've never gone the "bid-for-your-room" route, but was thinking it might be a good idea for London, since I'm not hung up on exact location. Thanks for the advice!

I always feel like a broken record b/c I always suggest this but - Cordova House Hotel - reasonable prices that include breakfast and only a couple of blocks from Paddington station in a great neighborhood - let us know how you make out!

i had to go to london from cardiff for four days a week for five weeks. since i am new to the uk, i decided to try a different neighborhood each week. i also tried not to spend more than £40/night or $80/night, since it was all out of pocket initially.
I liked Eden Plaza on Cromwell Road. As with everywhere inexpensive in London, rooms are small, but very clean and en suite. Great neighborhood - just cattycorner from the Natural History museum and about 2 blocks from the Gloucester Street tube. Also liked the Majestic, down the street about a half mile.
I made the mistake (for me) of booking a nice place in Bloomsbury, which had a great breakfast, a wonderful owner, but no en suite... I am a bit too something or other to schlepp down the hall to the loo.
Then in another mistake, I booked into a hostel in Bayswater. Very hip and fun, and the singing group from Yale, the Spizzwinks, sang. Had en suite, but no lift... Four flights was tough.
In a complete change of pace, i stayed in Bethnal Green in a sweet place, great room, double bed, ensuite, but of the beaten path. Fun neighborhood if you like ethnic.
All in all, Eden Plaza is where I will stay again.

Last March my mom and I stayed at the Abbey Court Hotel(www.abbeycourthotel.com) in the Hyde Park area of London. My husband and I are staying there again in August. We are also very budget minded, but like to be close to everything and reasonably comfortable. The hotel is very well located (central london, about 2 blocks from underground stop, in walking distnace to many sights, shopping, restaurants, etc.) It is a budget hotel, but you will have TV, hair dryer, air conditioning, private bathroom, breakfast. The hotel was very clean and safe and for the price is a very good stay. On the same website is a link to the Westpoint Hotel, which is next door to the Abbey Court. It is owned by the same company and looks very similiar in price, amenities and appearance.

I had never used Priceline before, but did on my last trip to London. I received some suggestions and encouragement from this board. Am I ever grateful. On earlier trips I had paid up to $150 a night for barely tolerable rooms in b and bs on Ebury St. Not this time. I bid $120 for a four star in Mayfair on Priceline. I got the Waldorf Hilton on Aldwych Lane dead center of the theatre district, easy walking to St. James Park, shopping, Westminster, and Covent Garden. The room had a great king bed, a microwave and a refrigerator. The bath was large and had Molton Brown amenities. It was perfect for me.

Don't get confused as there are two Abbey Court hotels in London and both in similar locations. One is more upscale and thus more expensive. It is locatd on Pembridge Gardens. The other Abbey Court is as noted in the previous post.
