$ in Italy

Just one more time, please, about using ATM in Italy. I've never been there and don't even own an ATM. In simple language, how does it work? Thank you

Margo,

If you don’t have an ATM card you can use a credit card (check with your credit card company to see if they charge an access fee). You put your card into the machine. The next step is a screen that asks what language you want. You push a button on the side that is on the same line as the language. Then you’re asked for your PIN (personal identification number). This is usually given to you along with your credit card. Then a screen with pre-populated amounts comes up. The amounts are in local currency (Lire) along with the Euro (the Euro is close to the dollar in value so this will give you a quick guide for the amount of money in local currency). You push a button indicating the amount of money you want. Sometimes you’re asked if you want a receipt. Your credit card pops out of the machines, then the money comes out and the receipt if the machine gives one. It couldn’t be easier.

Adrienne

I would suggest that you definitely obtain an ATM card from your bank and try it out at home before going overseas!

Adrienne and Howard, thanks.

And make sure you only have a four digit PIN.

On the outside chance that you encounter an ATM machine that is in Italian only and you can't speak/read the language--we only encountered one during a total of 3 weeks in Italy over the past 18 months--just look for the "annulla" button, press it, get your card back and go to another machine.
