In Frankfurt for Two Days!
 

Hi everyone,

I am in need of some travel suggestions. I am in frankfrut from nov 27-29 en route to alexandria, egypt alone. I am trying to figure out if i should stay in frankfurt or travel around to other portions of germany? any suggestions? Does frankfurt warrant me staying in it for two days or should i venture out?

How would you want to travel, I guess by rail, right? I think Frankfurt is boring and would highly suggest getting out. You'll be hitting the start of a lot of Christmas markets if that is something you might enjoy. You could go down to Wuerzburg and enjoy the Residenz and fortress, you could head up to Koln for the cathedral, there are SO many options out there! Try searching the site because I know trips from Frankfurt have been discussed dozens of times. Good luck and I really envy your trip to Egypt!

Frankfurt does have some nice museums and an old town, but with two days I think you can do better--and there's lots to choose from in easy travel distance. Just some of the possibilities:

Rhein Valley (Boppard, Rudesheim,etc.); Mosel Valley (Cochem, Burg Eltz, Beilstein, etc.); Wurzburg; Bamberg (a personal favorite of mine); the oft-touristed Rothenburg.

Heidelberg is soooooooooo nice. 1 hour train journey from Frankfurt.

take the train to rothenburg o.b. tauber...it is not too far and very enchanting and a break from the city to prepare you for alexandria

Heidelberg's beautiful christmas markets will have started already when you arrive.

Heidelberg is extremely over-rated. There are many other areas much nicer but I wouldn't plan on being amazed by heidelberg unless you've never seen any parts of germany before. Rothenburg is a very nice place to go. The christmas market is one of the best although I'm not sure when it begins. Every german city has it's own christmas market.

Rothenburg is very well done and an enchanting place, but do keep in mind that it is a set piece for the tourist trade. I don't agree with some who say it's become just another theme park ala Disneyworld, but it is dedicated to tourism.

I have to differ with Rufus, I think that the Rhein/Mosel area is a bit dreary during November, I think that Cubidon would be better served to visit cities during his trip because the countryside isn't particularly attractive and the little wine towns are nearly dead - just one persons opinion.

Frankfurt generally gets a bad rap on this board. I think you could spend your time in Frankfurt and enjoy it very much. There are plenty of museums, shopping venues, musical events, as well as the Christmas market. Frankfurt's Christams market is actually pretty good. You could always spend half a day in Bad Homburg or Weisbaden visiting the spas and/or casinos. I was stuck in Frankfurt for two days and enjoyed it. Good luck.
