is a double bed basically 2 twins pushed together. if so is this like a king bed in north america. whats the difference between a double bedroom and a bedroom with twins. thanks vic.

Double beds are usually just that. If you ask for a twin, it gets you more space in France, and twins are often pushed together and made up as one large bed.

no, a double bed is not two twins pushed together in most countries, it's a double bed. If it is two twin beds pushed together, they might call it a king (although it may be smaller than a N American-size king).

However, there are some countries or hotels where it will be two twins pushed together (especially in Germany, CR, some of those places.

So, the answer is you have to ask to be sure. Sometimes you can tell from the hotel photos (like in Germany, they are almost always two twins together, although that isn't really two twin beds, just two twin-sized mattresses in a larger frame.

A bedroom with twins will have the beds separated, if they call it that. It may or may not be larger than a double.

You have to ask, bottom line.

If bed size is important to you ASK. E-mail the hotel, call the hotel, whatever works. You will be very uncomfortable if you are expecting a king and get a standard double. If you want twin beds then specify "twin beds (2 beds)" in an e-mail. Don't be shy about asking.

thanks guys. we will be having our 2 year old daughter travelling with us. in case she wants to sleep with us then i assume we should have a room with two twins pushed together rather than one with a double bed. Being that 2 twins pushed toghether is more room than one double bed. Am I correct.

I think you need to be very specific in your request for beds. We were in a hotel in Paris on one of our trips there where the twin beds were firmly attached to a headboard that was firmly attached to the wall. There was an attached to the headboard nightstand between the beds. None of that stuff could be separated :-)

Sometimes, with the two twins pushed together they will affix a sort of large pad thing over the two beds to make a king. Like I said, you really need to be specific (and even then you can be surprised). Most hotels will not guarantee bedding (even in the U.S. where they will "note your request" but you can still end up with a king or two queen beds depending upon what is available when you check in.)
