In Budapest for a couple days
I'm flying into Budapest at noon on a Friday in the first half of November. I'll be meeting my husband there two days later, who is currently touring Europe with a musical group.
Can anyone suggest some places to stay and interesting things to do during those two days? I am on a somewhat limited budget. Also, I'd love to learn about some good vegetarian dining options. Thank you!! |
We spent a weekend in Budapest and stayed at Hotel Carlton on the Buda side. I'd recommend spending one day in Buda doing Buda Castle, the Labrynth, and Fisherman's Bastion. Then a day in Pest visiting museums (our definite favorite was the House of Terror) and spending a few hours at a Hungarian Bath. Be sure to have goose liver in a restaurant. We were there last year and it is wondeful. I loved Budapest.

Budapest has a very good public transportation system. You can buy multi-day passes at any subway station. BTW, be certain that you are asking for an "autobus." My wife, a Hungarian native speaker, tells me that "bus." is a very impolite word in Magyar.
The bus tours suggested in Fodor's are entirely worthwhile. We went all over the city with them. But, be careful to find you destinations on the signs; the line numbers are outdated. Also, there are often inexpensive high quality concerts in St. Stephens Cathedral during the week. Most hotels will have the schedules available. Unfortunately, having an audience of 1500 people in that location looks like a failure because the cathedral is so vast. |
Admission fees are fairly cheap in Budapest, compared to big western european cities. I'd also spend at least half a day on Buda Hill. The rest of the time, I highly recomemnd the Hungarian history museum, visit Central Market Hall (and grab a cheap lunch in the stalls upstairs), check out Gresham Palace...
I may give the baths a pass at this time of year. You can take a look at my recent Spring trip report to Budapest: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...omment-5651106 |
