I'm still confused about liquids in luggage...
 

I've searched this site as well as a couple of web sites and have found much conflicting info. What CAN NOT be carried in carry-on and what CAN be packed in checked baggage...know of an accurate website? For instance, I like having a bottle of witch hazel on a trip, soothes the skin and tired feet...it is basically alcohol...allowable in checked luggage?

You can take liquids in your checked luggage. It's the hand luggage that's regulated. That said I don't want to take a risk of putting wine bottles in my checked luggage.

For hand luggage, in Eueope at least, you cannot take liquids, creams, tooth paste sorts, if each item is more than 100ml + if the total exceeds 1 liter. If under that amount they also have to be put together in one transparent plastic bag that is resealable.

This is something of what I mean...no witch hazel because it is flammable...but then so is most whiskey...and by the bye, the last time I was in a Boots and asked for witch hazel they looked at me as if I were daft and the girl said, "Why I don't believe they've made that for years..."

I found above by googling. Is that the same alcohol amount as let's say red wine? If that's the case, it doesn't seem flammable. Or aren't they the same thing ?

The question is, does TSA consider witch hazel to be a flammable liquid or not? It isn't of course, it's no more flammable than wine, but reality has never been important to the TSA or its European equivalents. A couple of websites say it's rated as if it WAS flammable, because it contains ethyl alcohol; they calculate the flash point and so on as if it was PURE ethanol. Which is stupid. But not an argument I want to have with a mouth-breathing security guard who has the power to kick me off my flight and send me to a secret prison in Uzbekistan.

Just a suggestion DiAblo and Wombat - for sprains, tired and achy feet try some "Nurofen Gel 5%." I got it at Boots in England but also have seen similar concoctions in France and Germany.

It's an ibuprofen solution in a gel formula. Works pretty good and can be brought on board.

Go to the TSA website and your airline website to get current info on what you can carry on board. Items in checked baggage are usually not an issue unless it raises questions during x-ray. I have packed in checked baggage liquer and food items, normally required to be hand carried, with no problems at x-ray or in customs as long as the items are declared.

The witchhazel I buy (yes from Boots) is a gel. Just look in the homeopathic section

I flew in/out of Ireland last week and liquids are allowed in carry on -- as long as they all fit in 1 one-quart (or 1 litre) zip-lock bag and each is 3 oz (or 100 ml) or less. In fact they were handing out litre baggies to anyone who needed them.

meant to add - also flew in/out of the UK and in/out of Germany in the last 2 weeks - and all 4 airports/3 airlines followed the same requirements -- 1 quart bag/3 oz or less.

6 weeks time flying from Australia to USA, Canada and then Europe. have never flown anywhere before so I need explicit info also. I understand all liquids can't be more than 100ml in hand luggage. when it says put all in plastic bag does that bag get packed into the hand luggage or do you carry it in your hand to show? after showing it are you then allowed to pack in your hand luggage and get on the plane?

I could put some of these in checked luggage and it would be no problem would it? but if airline loses my luggage I would be lost without all these toiletries/cosmetics.

Airports vary, but for me, I've always put the bag into a separate tote container for the x-ray scanner. Sometimes, airports ask to see your liquids in the bag BEFORE putting them in the tote.

After I pick up stuff at the end of the scanner, I put it all back the way I want it.

I want to pack some diet Coke (for my Dad which is sometimes hard to find) and 3 mini water in my checked luggage. I like to have it when I land and was going to try and seal it and bring it. Am I losing it?? Will it be confiscated?

Or put them into checked bags, I doubt someone will steal your fave shampoo.
You have the accept the risk that your luggage can be lost or delayed.

You can carry on pre-moistened witch hazel pads or pack them in your checked luggage. Since they are pre-packaged and do not contain a massive amount of liquid, they will not be a problem. No need to buy or carry a large bottle of witch hazel. And these can be bought in almost any drug store or Wal-Mart.

yeadonite: The liquid restrictions concern <u>carry on</u> luggage. Has nothing to do w/ checked bags. You can take the coke if you need to. But why the water in your checked bag? I can understand maybe wanting a bottle of water on the flight (which you can buy after clearing security). But water is sold just about everywhere - and tap water is just as good most places.

yorkshire: Yep - I can get all that and more into the quart/liter ziplok baggie. Nearly every brand has travel or sample sizes of all those products. And if they don't, one can put some into a smaller container for the trip. BTW - solid deodorant doesn't have to go in the baggie so is a good substitute for roll on.

One caveat: transferring your toiletries to small bottles for carry-on doesn't always work. Some TSA people insist on a bottle with a labelled quantity.

Believe me, I cram my ziplock full, but considering the poster's trip &quot;from Australia to USA, Canada and then Europe&quot; they weren't going to get a full supply in there anyway, hence my recommendation to change brands for a couple things.

But I've never had difficulty locating a diet coke anywhere in Europe or Asia. I can't speak to Central America or South America, though.

I was so embarrassed to ask that I was going to use a new name but then you would think I was a troll. I am taking some small cans for insurance in case he can’t readily find a store to get some. To him it is more important then his meds. :)

Clarification about Witch Hazel (since that is being used as an example).
Witch Hazel is not necessarily Witch Hazel. By that I mean, if you go into a pharmacy or supermarket here in the U.S. and buy a bottle of Witch Hazel, more than likely it will contain app. 14% alcohol (not enough to be flammable, I think). But if you buy a bottle of Dickinson's Witch Hazel, it's 100% Witch Hazel (no alcohol). I believe that Witch Hazel is non-flammable. There may also be other brands that are 100% Witch Hazel, but I've only seen Dickinson's.

Mimar: it is VERY easy to find containers that are labeled w/ their capacity. Anyplace from Walmart/Target to drug stores, to Nordstrom Rack to - well, just all sorts of places. There are tubs, jars, bottles, squeeze bottles, spray bottles - and sizes from .3 oz up to 3 oz. No problem at all.

And if one re-uses other bottles like travel-sized mouth wash, shampoo and such - they will have the volume printed on the label.

Diet Coke is very easy to find everywhere in Europe including Eastern Europe.It's alot more expensive then it is in the U.S.Therefore I try to find neighborhood grocery stores to buy it. What I have not been able to find is Caffeine Free Diet Coke.

letsgo39 - we usually do home exchanges so are in residential neighborhoods where you can find whatever we want. Since we are staying in hotels in touristy areas I just want to be prepared. I am definitely frugal and would prefer not to buy from the hotel mini bars but I do love supermarkets in every country!

Last I looked diet Coke is not flammable and you can fill your checked bags with it.

One caution which I learned when packing a couple cans of beer on a domestic flight. Low pressure in the luggage hold can cause the cans to leak. I lost one beer. So I recommend that you put the cans of Coke in a Ziploc baggie so as not to soak your clothes if one of them springs a leak.

hopscotch - I guess that is what I meant to ask. Will it be ok. I have it nicely wrapped. Since we land on a Sunday I want to make sure he has enough diet coke, he cant drink wine so this is his drug of choice!

I don't know what &quot;nicely wrapped&quot; means but I do know that a 12 oz. can will fit in a Ziploc &quot;sandwich&quot; bag. Squeeze as much of the air out as you can. Seal it most of the way and lower it into a pan of water. This will force the air out the top of the bag and give you a snug fit with room for leakage. Then finish the zip.
