If you are in the area, pop into Harrods Department Store. It's a tourist attraction in itself. The prices are outrageous. They have anything and everything you could want (but can't afford). We loved the map section. There were original maps from the 1600's. Super nice salesman also.

We also really enjoyed the London Eye. Fantastic views from on top if it is a clear day. We enjoyed roaming around the Tower of London and the British Museum too.

There is so much to see and do in London, you probably have to pick one area in order to avoid wasting too much time traveling from place to place.

I know you are on a budget so check out this website:

My personal favourite site in London is the Tower of London, but its work 1/2 day...so with one day you may not want to spent that much time. http://www.hrp.org.uk/toweroflondon/

I would get a good guide book and see what you are interested in, knowing that with 1 day you wont be able to cover much....so pick maybe 1-2 main sites to see and enjoy that.

Do you have a WHOLE day? If so, without knowing you at all or where you will be staying, I'd suggest getting to the Tower of London at opening time and then after a visit and some lunch, go to the Westminster Abbey and visit, then see the surrounding area (Big Ben, the bridge, Parliament). A walk afterwards (start on south end of Westminster Bridge) along the South Bank toward the Milinneum Bridge will show you the Thames and a glance at St. Paul's.

Two major sites, like the Tower and the Abbey, are plenty.
