I'll like to share a GREAT travel-related gift I received for Christmas.

Earlier this Holiday Season somebody posted a question regarding gift ideas for travel nuts (meant in a good way ). My husband got me the CD-ROM Collector's Edition of the National Geographic Magazine-- every article from Vol.1 (Jan 1888). I LOVE IT!! I've been reading articles about Paris, some written after WW1; fascinating.

Something to consider for the historic traveler....

That is a very cool gift! Think of how much space all those magazines would take up, and you've got the whole collection on CD-ROM.

I confess.... it was not a selfless gift. I bought my husband "URBINO The Story of a Renaissance City" by June Osborne. We don't do "gifts".. but he found this under the tree and has had his nose in it ever since! I hope he surfaces by New Year!

Merry Christmas to all! I requested and received "1,000 Places To See Before You Die" (a traveller's life list) by Patricia Schultz. I anticipate many hours of good reading and planning. CJ

Maira

this really sounds fantastic, but I cannot find it on their web site. Can you give me any more guidance, please?

Sheila, for what I understand, this collection was put in the market in Nov 2002 by National Geographic Magazine with the idea of adding to it every 3 years. This venture was mostly motivated by their customers who had been clamoring for the mag to do it. It sold very, very well and, a year later, it is difficult to find. The rumor on the Internet software sites is that NG will be selling the whole set again with the added years, instead of the update add-ons like it was originally marketed (bummer if true!). I looked up ebay.com and they have 5 copies selling at approx $90/each (approx double what my husband paid). Amazon.com states the product has been discontinued; software-blowout.com has it for $190/each (way too much!). I am going to check where my husband got it and see if they have any more in stock and prices. I'll keep you posted.

My husband received the Nat'l Geo CD Rom set a few years back. I really appreciate you posting this, because he had not gotten it out for awhile. I told him what you were looking at. He went and got it out and discovered a lot he hadn't looked at before. Great idea Maira!

I've found this on ebay at a lot less than you mentioned.

Problem is, there are none on ebay UK and so far I can't find anyone who is prepared to ship out of the US. I'm going to give ita go, tho'.

Maira, thanks for the heads up. Great idea.
