We will be in Kusadasi in August and were hoping to include a Greek experience.
The ferry from Kusadasi seems as a expensive as a flight. Should I consider a different island instead. I had heard Samos wouldn't be overly touristy but may not have the nicest beaches. What island would you recommend in August? Then I'd like to fly for 2 nights to Athens.
The other option would be to skip Greece and see the Southern Coast of Turkey.

You need to check your sources again. No way is a ferry from Kusadasi to Samos more expensive than a flight. For a flight you'd first have to get to Istanbul, either by bus or flight from Izmir, then fly all the way back to Athens for a connecting flight to Samos, which is obviously a silly waste of time and money. The ferry from Kusadasi to Samos is €26 and takes 1.5 hours. http://www.feribot.net/feribot/?lang=en
Do these Samos beaches look "not nice" to you? http://tinyurl.com/o3v2bhk

Stay at Mr.Happy's Liman hotel in Kusadasi - excellent. Maybe take the ferry for a day over to Samos for a daytrip, but you can cross from Cesme easily to Chios , Kaz (great town) - to Kastellorizo etc. I'd say you can find all you are looking for on the south Turkish coast - maybe travel down as far as Antalya and a cheap flight back to Izmir?
