If you won the lottery and could travel wherever and whenever would you get fed up?
I have often thought that half the fun of holidays is the anticipation. If I won millions I would spend my time travelling. However I have wondered if you could get "fed up"- am I alone in this? And isn't it kind of sad to think like this?
I certainly would like to test the therory. I think it would take me a lot of years before I got "fed up" although I would need to come home now and again to touch base.
Yes Beth. I agree with you- if only I had the chance to get fed up! I watched a programme last night about 50 must sees before you die. I have been to some but there are many more I still want to see!
No Never. I love to travel. This year to China, I hope.
Fiona I saw that too!
It was weird and I was really surprised at some of the rankings!

I'd travel a lot more months out of the year but would still spend at least 50% of my time here in the UK, friends and family are very important to me, and much as I am addicted to travel, it wouldn't be fun 100% of the time.

In the other 50% I'd be able to travel in business class and then travel much as I do now but staying longer in places.

There are so many places I know I wouldn't get bored for at least the first 10 years.

If i was travelling full time I know I'd get fed up very quickly...

Kavey

I suppose that if traveling constantly involved moving from place to place every few days, I might get tired of it eventually. But if I could travel to a place I like, stay there and get acclimated (for perhaps a month or two) and then move on to somewhere else and stay for a long time, I think I could do that forever.
first class travel- now wouldn't that be great! I have only travelled "cattle class" up till now!
It would be fantastic to win the lottery and travel whenever and wherever you want. If you get tired of it, you could just stay put for a while somewhere fabulous or go back home for a while and then off again when you are ready. You could surprise family and friends and take them with you for some of your travels. The best part would be not having to squeeze it all in two or three weeks. It would be the ultimate leisure activity. I've go to run out now and buy my tickets for the big one!
The key would be to spread out your trips with time at home ( as Beth said). Oh wouldn't it be great to have the worry of getting bored with travel! Paris, Rome, Greece, Hong Kong, Mexico, Barbados, Antigua, China - here I come!(IF ONLY!!!!!!)
It's not really that "daft" a question. Research has shown that quite a few big winners have ended up wishing that they had never won as much money as all the anticipation has gone. It seems hard to believe. Frankly I have no time for those who bleat about money not changing how they live. Why bother entering the lottery in the first place? I hope I would make the most of a lottey win by travelling all over the place. You could then "gamble" a bit over your choices. Lets face it, if you don't like it, it's not that big a deal!Like Mari, I think you would enjoy surprising family and friends with holidays as well.
A great post for a Monday!!
I like the way Kavey thinks! Hadn't thought of it, but that would be my preference if I hit the lottery--I'd travel more frequently, but travel first class (at least on the flight portion, I don't think I'd care to stay at large, impersonal hotels).

I'd also take my friends!
I have always wanted to fly on the concorde. Winning the lotttery would help and I'd visit all my friends in their different countries and buy my dog a seat so he'd be with me.
I would definitely take my friends!
We would travel in First Class and stay for long periods of time, to get over the jet lag and relax and get really "into" the place. Say, a villa in Tuscany, Provence, where we would visit people who already have homes there, wander the places that you would not ordinarily go because there isn't time on your two week or less holiday. With all that money, there is all the time in the world!
I think the anticipation would change, still in the planning, but it would just be on a different level..at least I would like to find out~
Pup would definitely have his own seat. I might even charter a plane, skip all that airplane anxiety, relax on a plane full of friends and their pups too:)
I also saw the programme about the 50 places to see before you die and could not believe some of them. Disneyland at number 3??? And 2 places I'd never even heard of. And what happened to Hong Kong? If you didn't see it, can you guess what the number one place was? (CLUE- think big!!!!)
Mel...don't forget that we are friends!!

I too love my nest and while I would travel a bit more and would do the flight portion first class..it's still fun to stay at favorite places and take along family or friends who might not be able to go otherwise. I have a great friend who I would love to go off to Italy with to do all the great cooking classes !what fun we would have !!

There would still be anticipation..it would just be so much easier without budget wories!
Thinking about this is much more fun than the work I should be doing!

I think it would take me an incredibly long time before I'd tire of travelling...I would pop home when I feel the need--and then go back into the world and try out a new locale.
As for my travelling style, I think I'd want to rent wonderful villas or flats in various cities or towns vs. moving around constantly. When I got tired of a place, I could just move on. Maybe I stay in a place at least long enough to take some history classes in a local university or if in Italy, some cooking classes. I'm certain I'd want to spend some of my days in language school and nights in the pubs practicing my newly aquired skills...Perhaps w/my extra time, I could do some good instead of just living a wonderfully hedonistic lifestyle ;-)

One thing that might get to me is missing the stability and security of having those I love nearby. I'd worry about how I could maintain the friendships I already have as I gain new friends from around the world. Would it change me as a person?? (Of course, with all those millions, I could always have the dear old friends join me from time to time!) I'd probably miss sharing the day-to-day stuff w/my friends and family, but somehow, I'd figure out a way to keep the distance from being a factor.

Hmmm, think I'll end here and go pick up a few lottery tickets. If I win, I'll post again and tell you how manage such a dilemma!

I would keep it diverse. I would travel differnt places with differenet friends. Munich with my beer drinking buddies, the Caribeean with the ex (we both dive) etc...
Riches are best enjoyed when shared with others...

What about WITH whomever??!!!

Or better yet, should you get fed up travelling, may I take your place travelling while you get over getting fed up? he he!...just a thought!

That would be one of the best "dilemmas"...not being able to stop travelling!...alas, a luxury I cannot afford

Don't believe I'd ever get fed up. Friends can't believe I can travel for five months at a time, often staying two and three nights at a place and not get tired. But each time I do it, I almost hate to come home. No, I wouldn't get tired of traveling.
patrick
5 months at a time!? Surely you have already won the lottery! What a great life!
I doubt it, but I'd love to give it a try & find out! As others have said, I'd sure travel in a better way (such as first class) whenever possible. I might, but frankly, think it would take an awfully long time to get me to be "fed up".

BC
I would still travel with much anticipation but I think some of the fun would be gone because I would live in a couple of houses in my favorite places, Alaska and France.
The thing that I would enjoy so much is only traveling where I could take my dog along in a first class manner. I would hire a dog nanny to travel with me and help spoil my dog every second.
I hate leaving my dog behind. My husband usually only goes on 1 trip a year with me. He stays home with the dog while I travel 2 or 3 more times. He doesn't have the travel passion or time off that I have so it works out okay.
It would be wonderful to take my dog to dinner in Paris.

Anon - Re 50 Places, you must have missed HK. It was in there, although at number 22, certainly not as high as I would have rated it. HK and Greece are the two places that I don't think I could ever tire of going back to, no matter how much money I won. Speaking of Greece, what happened to that? Not even the Acropolis rated a mention.
Elaine
Yes I did miss HK in the top 50. I took a quick phone call. Glad it was there. Funnily enough I absolutely love Greece as well. Can't understand why the acropolis wasn't there. It was always a "must see" for me.( and even when I saw it I went back to it another twice!!!)
I would just love to travel as often as possible. Patrick is someone I really envy!
Patrick
I am assuming you are now retired. I hope I have the money to do the same amount of travelling when I retire. I don't have any children so am managing to put back quite a bit for my non-working years. As I'm well into my 40s now I would hope that if I did win the lottery I wouldn't have enough time to get fed up travelling!!!
I'd use that money to send some of the fodorites on extended travel, the ones who spend their days facing the screen, and always talk about this or that dream they have. I'd like to help make it happen for 20 or so, and it would be fun to select the winners, just to witness those smiles as they switched off and started packing. I hope you ALL win that lottery, and when you get back, please post about your experiences. If I win, get ready to go.
x
what a nice thing to do! Do you really mean it?
yes, anon2, I really do mean it!! In fact, I left something out - when possible, I might like to be permitted to tag along and enjoy their fun and pleasure. I've thought about how I'd spend money if I had a fortune - and always with travel it has involved collecting close friends and taking them off to see the world, all expenses taken care of, for 2-3 weeks, until they wanted to come back home. I see people posting here who wish to go - why not help make it possible for them. They are among the most interesting folks I have the pleasure of chatting with. I think most would make fabulous travelling companions. I must say, to be frank, I never win anything. I am lucky in other ways. So, I hope YOU will win. And I am already packed, lol.
It has been great reading everyones responses! ( and great to daydream!)
x
please remember me when you win! What a lovely thing to do for people!
Anon,
That wins the nicest post of the day! You sound like one special person.

D
I have posted this before. While many retired people have "invested" in a cottage at the lake, or a condo in Florida, or a house in the mountains, my "investment" for retirement is 5 months of traveling, often in Europe. Although I must admit after this horrible past year, I had to reduce to 3 months. I'd much rather travel than have a second home or cottage somewhere.

In short, "No!"
This is for Patrick.....
I agree with you, I do the same thing but for less time, so far I can't afford it for 5 months ( pretty soon I hope), Hurrraaayyyyyy....
how sad if you did get fed up! But then if you did tire of it, you could always send some deserving causes off on holiday instead. Wouldn't that make you feel good?
Ah! I wouldn't get fed up. I'd probably establish a second home in France or Italy, maybe a beach place in the Caribbean or Hawaii, and a classy condo or co-op in NYC. You need some comforting places to retreat to when you just want to chill out.
Yes! uhoh, that would be perfect. Homes in different countries. Then no packing, the clothes are there.
Let me see, I guess a flat in Mayfair, a villa in Tuscany, a nice apt in NYC. Sounds good to me!
great post! What imaginations you have!

Gee, I don't know. But it would sure be fun to try it and see if I would.
