Justretired:

I wish I had the talent to paint. It was my passion as a child and teenager, and I continue to purchase paints, canvases, brushes and paper, but I have lost the knack and don’t have the time to practice and improve. When I travel, I take lots of photos, always meaning to paint the images when I get home. Unfortunately, every time I have tried the results have been really disappointing. Hopefully, when I am “just retired” I will rediscover the talent I had a child.

I visited the Dolomites in 2003 and was delighted with the beauty of the region. Here are my photos from the trip.

I believe that almost everyone can learn to paint. They may not be the next Picasso or whoever, but they can learn to produce something that is representative or even abstract. In some ways, it's a bit like learning to play the notes of the piano; in the end, most people, of course, never become concert performers, but they love playing all the same.

I think it's important to find teachers who stimulate and teach. I have been studying for many years with a wonderful teacher, who is Greek, educated in Italy after WW11, and was trained classically. He has ongoing "studio" classes where the students work in all sorts of media on different projects. I tend to run my adult classes the same way. He is generous with his vast knowledge. Art takes a great deal of self motivation and discipline- I'm motivated, but often allow myself to get distracted.

Those of you who are photographers are artists as well. I really appreciate you all sharing so many ideas and photos, though I had trouble just now getting into Ger's link ( I think I'll have to use my husband's computer- it's newer). Again, any other ideas would be appreciated.

Incidentally, I'm just learning all the abbreviations many of you use- you know, like DH (dear husband). When I first saw DH, I knew it was something with husband from the context, and thought that dead or dreaded husband probably wasn't it. Has anyone ever published a thread with an explanation of all these abbreviations?

Thanks.
