Yesterday was a cool and cloudy day in Central Switzerland so I took the kids and jumped on the train to Locarno. After 2 hours, we arrived in sunshine, clear blue skies and warm temperatures. We strolled from downtown Locarno to Minusio, walking along the lake on a pedestrian/bike path. Simply beautiful and NO tourists.

My husband and I are Americans living in Sicily. We've been here two years and have one to go. Besides local (southern Italy) travel we haven't done any amazing off the beaten path traveling. There are too many major destinations and not enough time. Where we make our money is that we take advantage of the off season. We go to Rome every Feb, it's practically empty. Or Venice in November. It makes a huge difference when you beat the heat and the crowds. We never travel in July or August, just local trips. And we never go anywhere without a Rick Steve's book, he's by far the best (except for cuisine and nightlife)!
Enjoy your time in Europe...it goes by so fast.
