'In the real world, it means, as twk says, be observant, be aware of the potential for danger, stay alert. That isn't alarmist, it's common sense.'

Have you read travel alerts from the governments of other countries? They are nothing like this. They are specific in terms of country and sometimes even quite distinct regions within countries. A blanket ooo its dangerous out there doesn't help anyone make an informed decision on where to go and what to look out for.

My home is Europe. So, what shall I do?

Nothing. The warning was only for American citizens. You can go about your business, EU citizen.

How dare you all mock and question American Courage in the face of terror. Didn't you watch Patriot Games? Who saved Lord William Holmes? An American. Movie after movie, who are the heros? Americans. Jason Bourne took care of all the assets in Europe all by himself. Why? Because he is an American. Who saved Europe from Nazis and Bolsheviks? Americans

Europe is safer after this warning because Americans will be on guard, ready to protect our frail European friends. If Donald Trump is invited to visit Europe, all the terrorists will sink away in the darkness because of fear of the great man

I can't argue with that logic.

@sparky...

Gee, I'm glad the UK government keeps a cool head and doesn't "provoke fear" in the hearts of those brave Brits going to France....check out the recent UK official travel advisory for citizens going to France:

"There is a high threat from terrorism. Due to ongoing threats to France by Islamist terrorist groups, and recent French military intervention against Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL), the French government has warned the public to be especially vigilant and has reinforced its security measures."

Doesn't apply to me as I am not a British citizen. Besides, I have always made it a point to avoid France.

Frank is in high dudgeon since his banning from the Lounge.

BTW, Frank, I lobbied to overturn your banning. To no avail, apparently.

Frank's replies amuse me greatly in this thread. It's a shame that this forum doesn't properly support quoting, emoticons, or inline images.

As has been said a number of times now the difference between the US warnings and the warnings issued by the other countries is the lack of specificity in the US warnings. They are not helpful to anyone as they give no specific information whatsoever.

No-one is saying that US citizens are cowards and Europeans are braver. They are commenting on the lack of genuinely useful information given out by the US government. Is that a difficult concept to get your head round?

I am actually running out of different ways to say the same thing. Maybe pictures would help?

Like the t-shirt says; I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

I read somewhere that the State Department's announcement was not based any particular or direct threat. More of a "hey guys, you might not want to hang around with large groups of people" type of thing.

Uninvited he is going to Scotland to open a new golf course which all the locals despise. I am sure there is not leader in Western Europe who wanted to be seen with him. Do you Boris might fly and meet him?

@done: "lack of specificity in the US warnings....."

Hmm, let's see: I spy "France" and "Poland" in the U.S. warnings quoted above.

FranknSense: I'm afraid your endeavours may be mutually exclusive but I bow to your unrelenting tenacity and, dare I say, hint of incredibly dry wit?

I don't see anything specific in that UK warning. In fact, the US warning was more specific, mentioning specific events that might be at higher risk. I'm surprised they didn't include the Vatican, which was specifically threatened, along with the Colosseum.

Italy has the following warning about travel in France:

[ Following the terrorist attacks in Paris last 13 November, the French Government declared a state of emergency, later prolonged for another two months beginning with 26 May, and has reinstated police checks at the national borders. [Italian] citizens are invited to exercise caution in moving from one place to another, and to pay attention to the announcements of the French authorities. ]

There's a similar warning for Belgium, which adds, "Il Belgio, anche in quanto sede delle Istituzioni europee, presenta crescenti rischi di esposizione al terrorismo internazionale." [Belgium, as the headquarters of European [EU] organizations, presents growing risks of exposure to international terrorism.]

What a relief it is to me as an American that we are not the only cowards issuing security warnings to our citizens.

Nothing about Turkey ?
I live in Brussels, work in Paris and must go to Istanbul soon.
I guess it is best I don't read the warnings...

I'm so very dry my presence would seduce Jay and Sparkchaser to increase their pint consumption to such an extreme, I can convince them "God Save the Queen" was a knockoff from "My Country Tis of Thee"
