If you had to choose.... Spain or Italy?

1 month long vacation. I'm torn between Spain/Morocco vrs Italy/France.

Any gut reactions would be appreciated.

Rex Aug 22nd, 2002 05:13 AM

List the top three things that come quickly to your mind as to why you THINK you want to go to any of the four, and "we" will see if we can help you.

Me personally, the ideas for France and Italy come to my head like a machine gun - - and quickly for Spain, and not at all for Morocco.

But that's me. You didn't say that you are sending ME for a month long vacation, did you?

Best wishes,

Rex
kavey Aug 22nd, 2002 05:17 AM

My gut reactions are down to what I have already seen, and what is high in my list of wanna-sees.

Having visited Spain and Morocco, and enjoyed both I think I'd opt for France and Italy.

I've been to both numerous times but I adore them.

So my gut reaction is a very personal one.

As Rex suggests, what about each combo appeals to you, that info might garner some good advice.

debby Aug 22nd, 2002 05:20 AM

Hi Karen!I!m jealous about your trip whereever you go.If it is your first time then I would go to Italy for 4 weeks .Florence, venice,Rome;the coasts and the lake como,Portofino, sicilia. If you definitely want to go also to France then 3 weeks Italy 1 week Paris.Enjoy your trip and sure you'll have a wonderful time.

carol Aug 22nd, 2002 06:19 AM

Been there. Italy and France definitely.

Jackie Aug 22nd, 2002 08:22 AM

If you havent been, choose Italy & France. Italy is perfecto...

a--z Aug 22nd, 2002 08:28 AM

And even if you have been there, Italy & France are the places to go !
Vita Aug 22nd, 2002 08:52 AM

Of those you mentioned, I've only been to Italy and I think you could do a whole month there!

Ellen Aug 22nd, 2002 09:45 AM

I'd spend 3 weeks in Italy - Positano, Rome, Florence, Venice, Lake Como. And then the final week in Barcelona.

Tony Aug 22nd, 2002 11:57 AM

Karen,
If you have some knowledge of any of the languages this will go a long way to making which ever choice you make all the more enjoyable.
Tony

Art Aug 22nd, 2002 12:35 PM

Three weeks in Italy and one week in Barcelona and the bask regions.

Deputy Aug 22nd, 2002 12:44 PM

Spain and Morocco are too much alike so I would choose France/Italy.

K Aug 22nd, 2002 01:16 PM

Italy/France. Italy is my all-time favorite destination, and from what I've read about France, it has so much to offer. Spain's riches seemed too spread out, though since you have a month that's not so much of an issue. I've never been to Morocco.
And speaking of "Gut reactions"--Italy's food is OUT OF THIS WORLD (I still have dreams about it.) France is no slouch either, from what I've read. In my opinion, Spain's food is so-so.

Have a great trip!

Jim Aug 22nd, 2002 03:09 PM

Italy and France are the pefect choice become one leads so conveniently into the other. You could fly into Paris and fly out from Rome. Both countries have excellent and inexpensive rail systems. We buy tickets as we go rather than tie ourselves to a pass. You can eat well in both countries no matter what your budget.

M Aug 22nd, 2002 05:26 PM

How about three weeks in Italy and one week in Andalusia (Seville, Granada)?

M

Forget Morocco altogether and go to Spain IMO. It is a zillion times cheaper than the other destinations, you can get gorgeous accomodation for a fraction of the cost that you would pay in France or Italy, and the food is to die for. The person who wrote in this thread that the 'food in Spain is so-so', obviously only ate at McDonalds.

The people are friendly in Spain and there are so many beautiful places to see, Granada, Sevilla, Barcelona, San Sebastian, et cetera. I have travelled to Spain many times, and there is still so much that I have yet to see.

Our accomodations in Italy were triple the price we paid in Spain, and not half as good value for money.

Have fun wherever you end up.
Elizabeth
Huh? Aug 22nd, 2002 08:41 PM

Spain and Morocco are too much alike? That was a joke, right? Deputy, if not a joke, could you elaborate please. Having been to both, I fail to see ANY similarities between cosmopolitan, European Spain and third world Arabic/Muslim Morocco. I am not trying to be snide, but I am just baffled by that statement. What did I miss? What part of Spain and what part of Morocco are similar? Even Ceurta, the Spanish holding in Morocco looked nothing like Spain (to me anyway).

Ronda Aug 22nd, 2002 08:59 PM

Italy and France. No question about it.

xyz Aug 22nd, 2002 09:24 PM

Gut reaction: Italy & France-yes!!

wayne Aug 22nd, 2002 11:38 PM

Spent 3 wks driving around Italy in 98 then 3 wks driving around Spain in 99. Altho both are beautiful and nice, we much preferred Italy. Every city had world class bldgs, every place had unforgettable food. The only city I rememberd most of Spain was Barcelona tho we also liked Ronda.Cant comment abt France as I have only been to Paris.

Max Aug 23rd, 2002 12:57 AM

Hey Deputy Ass, Obviously You Have Never Been To Either Spain Or Morocco Or You Would Know That They Are Nothing Alike. Spain Is A Beautiful, Vibrant & Exotic Country With Kind People. It Is A Perfect Holiday Destination. I Would Recommend A Side Trip To Portugal Instead Of Morocco.

mpprh Aug 23rd, 2002 01:15 AM

hi

much of the above points to substance abuse !

Peter
Michelle Aug 23rd, 2002 01:23 AM

Karen, Spain & Portugal would be a better choice if possible. I recently did a tour of these two wonderful countries, and had a spectacular time. Spain is beautiful. Another option is Spain & France.

Ryan Candee Aug 23rd, 2002 03:17 AM

We just did Spain and Italy--with an overnight train through southern France. Each has its benefits--Spain lends itself more readily to organized travel--the trains run on time while in Italy schedules don't mean anything. However, we found the food in Italy to be simply incredible--you can find excellent affordable food in Spain too but not as consistently as in Italy.

22 answers in 14 hours. Not bad. I'm betting that Karen has no idea how fast this forum moves, and probably hasn't come back to read any of these!
Well... my fellow Fedorites helped me with my fabulous trip to Greece/Turkey in 2000 and I have no reason to believe you would fail me now. I am quite surprised at the overwhelming response of "Italy".

I plan to rethink Italy. I admit it has typically scared me off because I hear it is hard on the pockbook. But where there is a will there is a way!!

I still need to see Spain one day... maybe as a France/Spain combo.

Thanks AGAIN!!!!

When would you be traveling there? France can get rainy and chilly by mid-October, while Italy can still have beautiful weather. I haven't been to Spain in the fall. Morocco had ideal weather when I went there in late November (did Marrakesh, Meknès and Fez for 12 days), and came back to Paris to hit an ice storm the next day.
