If you had only 10 days in Rome, what are the 'must see'.s
 

Daughter, who is on a tight budget, finally saved enough for her and her DH to spend 10 days in Rome. From all you seasoned travellers,what are the very must see's that we could suggest to her. She is so excited.

Ten days is a long time; your daughter could see most of the well-known sights mentioned in any guide book.

Aside from all the "regular" tourist sites I would suggest a tour with Micaela Pavoncello (JewishRoma.com) of the jewish ghetto. She is expensive if you use her alone as a private guide but she will set up a small group for you. We spent a lovely day going to Ostia Antica by train. We toured the site then got back on the train to continue on a couple of stops to the beach in Ostia.
I can't recommend highly enough how important a private guide is for the Vatican tour. I can't imagine getting through those crowds in a large group or seeing it on our own.
Be sure to take some time to spend in The Villa Borghese (their Central Park). There is a tram that takes you around the park.

in Spring and summer, Tivoli is lovely - the Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa are the major attractions. nice restaurants in the town for lunch too.

she might also want to go to Orvieto - the front of the Cathedral alone is worth the trip!

Depending on when she is going, I would spend only five days in Rome and the other five in Tuscany or the AC, or do the traditional Venice, Florence, Rome itinerary.

The Vatican takes up pretty much one full day. And I agree that there's time for a few days someplace else such as Tuscany.
