If I became wealthy then I would like to live half of the year in a luxurious farmhouse in the South of France and the other half of the year in a large chalet on a hill overlooking Lake Lucerne or near Montreux overlooking Lake Geneva Switzerland.

Well if we're in the realms of fantasy...

I would have a house in London (actually I've got one of these)

I would have a winter appartment in Cordoba

A flat in Chiang Mai

and a country house in hampshire (I used to have one of these, but I can only afford one house).

That would keep me happy

I`ll always call Australia home (someone should write a song about that). The people I love are there. For sheer variety and grandeur of scenery, Ifve never seen anywhere quite so breathtaking. The amazing blue sky set off against red earth, the smell of Eucalyptus on summer air, the sunsets, the twilights...I could go on and on. It is safe, the cost of living is low, people are relaxed, and you can buy cheaply almost any type of produce imaginable.

Still, when all that peace, quiet and cheap fruit got to me, a nice apartment in Tokyo (Aoyama or Harajuku of course), with access to some of the most amazing shopping (for anything you can imagine) in the world, not to mention an incredible array of international dining, nightclubs, and a fast-paced, funky, weird creativity like nothing else Ifve ever come across.

For melancholy soul-searching perhaps a dilapidated traditional house in the old part of Kyoto, where I could sip sake and watch the moon in Autumn...

Scotland - I am sure I lived here in another life. Perhaps a cottage outside of Inverness, or on the River Dee, or a flat in Edinburgh.

Well, actually I WILL be moving to Italy in the fall, but it's not going to be as glamorous of a lifestyle as is typically pictured when you think about "moving to another country." We will be more like budget travelers with a tiny apartment . BUT, when I was originally looking at places to live and such, we found this beautiful farmhouse in Le Marche region (I lived in Italy before, as a student, and we lived in Le Marche) that seemed like the true Italian dream. Ahh...maybe we'll be able to stay somewhere like that for a weekend, but not for a full year . Moving to Italy in itself is enough, though, even if I cannot live in my dream home. We're looking at moving to Verona.

I have a picture of the yellow apartment building (looks like four floors with balconys, probably one large flat to a floor) in Verona, just across the river from the old city...the view over the river into town must be fantastic. That's where I dream of retiring to for a few years. We will probably visit the South of France (why don't people say "Southern France"... it always seems like they say South of....?) next year, so I may modify my dream. I also wouldn't turn down a stylish flat in Chelsea (London not NYC...then again, that wouldn't be bad either as long as I had another place for chilling out several months out of the year!)

While I've enjoyed my trips to Europe, it would have to be Brazil for me. Lovely people, great culture, outstanding food and best of all...glorious weather!

France, most likely Paris -- for the detailed attention paid to the finer things in life -- such as cheese, bread and wine

I have been to Europe several times, and I truly love it, but for a lifelong place to live I'll stick with my small farm in New Hampshire USA. That being said, I would love a few months in Tuscany or Austria. Although I do enjoy the quaint old stone villages of Europe, I would miss the greenery that most US towns take for granted as part of their makeup.

Just off the cobblestone street stands a lovely old brick home with a red tile roof. The flower garden trails all the way back to a canal in Brugges. At the edge of the canal stands a stately white gazebo. There I would sit and eat chocolate and look through the lace curtains at the swans swimming below. From this window one can see an ancient stone bridge covered with moss growing the shade of the mulberry tree...

Would reside on the cliffs above Malibu, and travel for various amounts of time to: Paris and Venice, FWI, Thailand and Vietnam, Russia, Morocco, and southern Africa. When it's safer, naturally to Beirut, Iran and Turkey.

Yeah, but it's not just another country, or even another city, but what district of the city or street in the district or...

So not just San Francisco, but actually Telegraph Hill, more specifically Kearney or Sansome Sts. or the Filbert Steps (east side...) Oh, must have private parking, too.

Or Scotland, Edinburgh, New Town, Heriot Row or Royal Circus (or Circus Lane or Cumberland St. provided it's got private parking...)

I also like the Amsterdam houseboat, but on which canal? Any available with private parking?

Someplace in the W. 80s close enough to bring home dinner from Barney Greengrass or Zabar's. Doorperson and parking, well...

Oh, and not forgetting Hawaii, Big Island, on sandy beach near City of Refuge, air-conditioned and protected from storms. Parking wouldn't be a problem.

All this takes to bring about is just picking the right numbers and getting the Powerball to roll the right way. I'm working on it.

Does anyone find it interesting that most people who posted answers on this thread are Americans who would choose to live in Europe yet Europeans aren't dying to come and live in America.

I wonder why that is?
