Sometimes you might get stopped and have to show it for ID. My ex-boyfriend who was from Ghana used to get stopped constantly throughout Europe. He was legally in all of the countries he was living in as he's an engineer with an international company. He was constantly hassled.
One day while I was walking through the 7th for a morning stroll, the police stopped an African man and were asking questions and looking at ID. I watched from nearby. They looked at me, for quiote a while, but then I guess were so busy with him until they didn't stop me. Happy Travels!
