What in heaven's name is a ballpark and why would millions of people want to huddle in it?

Spain has just refused an independence referendum to Catalonia, so I can't imagine them welcoming a small breakaway nation into the EU. Would Belgium or even Italy?
As for the pound, the UK has avoided jointing the Euro. Why should it join another monetary union?

I suppose one historical parallel would be the long process of separation of modern Norway from Sweden. But by then (by comparison with the UK's continuing position in the modern international "architecture") Sweden had long since ceased to be a major power in northern Europe, let alone anything wider, and didn't stand to lose very much except a bit of the King's self-regard.

Which makes it all the more surprising that the pro-Union politicians either haven't recognised that set of implications, or have made such a botch of the consequent arguments. I suppose that's another reflection of the underlying political facts, that make it very hard to argue that Scots voters have much of an influence over such matters anyway, their only voice in the coalition government coming from a few LibDems.

Interesting to see what happens when Orkney and the Shetlands go for independance from Scotland as they have all the oil.

BBC is running a comedy at the moment when London decides to leave the UK (recent calculations show that that every Londoner gets subsidised by the rest of the UK). Lights blue touch paper and retires.

Obviously, not having visited here much recently, I missed all this. What a civilised discussion. Try being up here and living in the middle of two years worth of mayhem and personal invective
