If not paris

If you couldn't go to Paris...where would your next favorite Paris wananbe city be?? Rome not included....

MomDDTravel Apr 24th, 2008 03:06 PM

It is not Paris, but my cousin is in Prague right now and says it is one of the most beautiful cities she has ever seen... I would like to check it out!

I've lived in Paris and, actually, I prefer Barcelona. Great architecture, stylish citizens, good museums, good shopping and lively cafe culture. It's by the ocean, and has some great neighbourhoods for strolling. And people seem to clean up after their dogs (an improvement over Paris).

If you want to go to Paris, why are you not going? Cost, distance, time, travel partner wants to do something different? Are you limiting the answers to Europe? Are you just looking for a new place that is like Paris? Details please.

Partner is overdosed on Paris....I was wondering if Lyon was a option? Yes Paris is perfect to me....I don't get tired of it...yet

Londonres Apr 25th, 2008 04:13 AM

How about Strasbourg? Wonderful food and a lovely city.

Gretchen Apr 25th, 2008 04:25 AM

Then Provence or Normandy?

NeoPatrick Apr 25th, 2008 05:10 AM

It's kind of hard to compare Paris, but if it is a city you want and try to get as close the feel and "style" of it, I kind of think Vienna and Prague might come the closest.

ira Apr 25th, 2008 05:12 AM

Hi H,

>Partner is overdosed on Paris...

Nonsense.

If I couldn't go to Paris, I would rather die and go to heaven. :)

In Europe:

Venice
Florence
Praiano, Positano or Amalfi
Prague
Beaune/Dijon
Sarlat or any town nearby w/a car
any small town in Alsace w/a car
Colmar w/o a car
Lindau
Vienna
Salzburg
Munich
Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Lyon is good. A smaller version of Paris, with a nice Old Town, some similar achitecture, good restaurants, art gallery, parks, river cruises, a mountain in the city with views, roman ruins, above average archeological museum, day trip to Alps,etc...

I also liked Vienna and would go back to spend more time. Prague...on the list also.

Lyon.
As France's second city, it has much to offer, with its own character and atmosphere (and better climate and food).

Nikki Apr 25th, 2008 06:42 AM

Unless you would really rather be in France, I would take a good look at Barcelona. Lots to see, great food, plentiful cultural activities.

travel2live2 Apr 25th, 2008 06:54 AM

Not a fan of Paris (except for the food) so would highly recommend Prague, York and Dubrovnik. They are all gorgeous and interesting and full of history.

NeoPatrick Apr 25th, 2008 07:27 AM

I'm kind of surprised by the comments regarding Lyon. We've done two stays in Lyon and I really like the city. There's a lot to do there, the food is great, and it's a nice sized city. But I've never felt (other than the fact they speak French) it is very much similar to Paris. Granted the old town has a certain "Left Bank" feel, but the rest of the city doesn't have anything like the same vibe that Paris does. I think a lot of other cities (language excepted) "feel" a lot more like Paris than Lyon.

Christina Apr 25th, 2008 08:33 AM

I don't really understand the question and some answers, either. At least not Lyon or Strasbourg. They are nice enough cities to visit, I like Lyon a lot, but they aren't like Paris (except French, I guess). Strasbourg is really not like Paris, being in Alsace.

My next favorite cities are Prague and Krakow, but not because I think they are like Paris.

carolinetaylor Apr 25th, 2008 09:32 AM

Isn't Budapest known as the "Paris of the East"

carolinetaylor Apr 25th, 2008 09:33 AM

sorry forgot to add that i'd probably go to Prague, it is a truly beautiful city

travel2live2 Apr 25th, 2008 10:05 AM

Venice is wonderful, too. Not really a Paris wanna be but a fascinating destination!

gruezi Apr 25th, 2008 11:22 AM

I would head to Amsterdam or Venice - different and yet wonderful.

Strasbourg would just make you miss Paris.

Well, I'm a Paris-a-holic...

Can't imagine getting sated.

Amsterdam or Venice would also get my votes. Not that they have anything to do with Paris one way or the other, but two great cities to visit.
