If an AirBerlin flight arrives in Rome at 11:30 ...

Disclaimer: OK ... this is going to be a ridiculously specific question.

My flight (supposedly) arrives in Rome at 11:30. I need to get the train from the airport to Roma Termini to get to Naples. How much time will I need? Should I book the 12:45 or the 13:05? Or later? ... and where do I purchase the airport train tickets to get the cheapest fare?

As always, thanks to those who can help.

Be careful of Air Berlin.

They are notorious for being late.

Are you flying directly to Rome or do you have a connection in Düsseldorf?

It takes about 30 minutes to get to Termini from Fiumicino on the Leonardo Express.

Trains leave every half hour on the :05, :35

I would give myself at least an hour to get luggage, go through Immigration, and walk to ,the train station.

Will you have to use the ATM?

You can buy your ticket for the LE at the tabac in front of the trains.

Once when we flew into Rome we waited for over an hour to get our luggage. So I would leave a few hours.

YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!! See? I ask this completely unreasonablely detailed question and - pow - within minutes! - people are jumping in. Amazing!

My flight goes through Berlin with a 2 hour layover. The plan, at least for now, is to not have any checked bags. Can I purchase my train ticket from Rome to Naples and pay some fee to change the reservation part if we get in late? I'm traveling in July - how crowded are the trains? Will I be out of luck if I need to change a reservation? (I'm telling you - this Italian train business has got me MOLTO confused!)

I love you guys!

We arrive in Rome at 10:30 and I have made reservations out of Termini for a train that leaves three hours later hoping that will be enough time.

You can buy tickets for the Leonardo Express from machines at the airport so there should be no need to buy THAT segment in advance.

If it were me I would leave myself at least two hours if not three.

Hopefully GAC will chime in, but it is my understanding if you buy discounted tickets in advance and you miss your train, you lose the fare and have to buy full-price tickets at the train station.

I can't comment on reservations for train from
Termini to Napoli because I have always bought my tickets right before getting on train.

If you have no checked luggage and your plane lands about 11:30, plan for the 1:05 LE from Fiumicino to Termini.

This would put you at Termini at 1:35 PM

Thin, who always plans for the worst and never makes train reservations

The easiest way would be to just buy a ticket for the next available train at a ticket machine in Rome Termini. There are tons of trains between Rome and Naples and they are seldom fully booked. You may get some discount if you book in advance in the web, but in my opinion, that's not worth the hours you will have to wait at Rome if your plane arrives in time if you have booked a ticket for a later train resp the hours you will have to wait at a ticket office if you tray to change a prebooked ticket after having missed the train.

I'm with neckerd here.

worth just buying a ticket for the next available train when you get to Termini. anything else is too stressful and potentially expensive.

To be fair to the OP just how much of a discount would the OP be giving UP by waiting to buy a ticket once they arrive?

Very close to having my head explode.

Ok, what about this? Buy a railpass (hold on, hold on ... I know you guys hate railpasses ... just let me finish.) Buy a railpass (from my buddy Rick Steves - pretty good price) but don't buy the reservation until we know which train we're taking ... how 'bouts that? Wouldn't that save me some money over buying the full price fare the day of? My buddy Rick Steves says summer train travel is dicy - very crowded and sometimes trains are booked. Is my boy daft? I guess I should tell you - There are 5 of us, me, hubs, son 1 (20), son 2 (17) and my dad (83) ... traveling July 8 - 21, 2013.

Well, I just went back to the trenitalia site to see what my cheapo options are and the cheapo fares are pretty much gone. I guess I'm buying tickets the day of ... Will there be more, maybe not as cheap, fares available or when they're gone they're gone?

I can't answer your last question, but I tend to guess that with the type of software used to set ticket prices these days, when the cheap seats are gone, they're gone. Doesn't mean that is anything but my guess.

I just will tell you that in situations like this, I tend to do what neckervd suggests. I just get the tickets when I get to the train at FCO. Has it ever happened that second class was sold out? Yes.

I bought first, because I only needed two tickets. But I still think I'd take the chance with more people. Spread the cost of the possible upgrade from 2nd to 1st that MIGHT happen if 2nd is sold out, over the time and effort going in to this very big trip.

I'm a cheapskate, and it is still worth it to me to just relax a little and get whatever train tickets are most convenient.

I also tell myself that twenty years ago, I didn't even know that there were discounts or booking choices. Information is good, but overload can rob me of a little peace of mind.

Let's be serious: there are about 4 to 5 trains running between Rome and Naples every hour. Even if one of them would be fully booked, the others wouldn't.
Fares:
Frecciarossa and Frecciaargento: 43 EUR standard, 29 EUR economy, 19 EUR super economy
Frecciabianca: 38 EUR standard, 19 EUR economy
Intercity: 25 EUR standard, 19 EUR economy, 9 EUR super economy
Regionale: 12 EUR standard
Standard fare tickets can be bought at any time, until a few minutes prior to the train's departure (but sometimes queues at the ticket machines); the other fares can only got in the web and these tickets are usually not refundable.

Since you've all been so very nice ...

Here are all my stupid questions:

1. The economy category tickets on line have this in the description "reservation change allowed before departure" Does this mean my ticket is good on any train and I can change reservations for some fee? If I have tickets and reservations for a train and I miss the train can I just rebook the reservations?

2. If I had a rail pass do I just walk on to any train that doesn't require reservations? For example the L. E. out of Fiumicino? Or on the Circumvesuviana line from Naples to Sorrento?

3. My dad, 83 years old, keeps pressing me to book 1st class. I've read some stuff about there's more reliable air conditioning (travel in July), reservation don't sell out and there's more luggage space but, man, the price difference. I'm thinking for the first train we take maybe do 1st class since it's going to be such a long day but for subsequent trips ...?

As always, thank you thank you thank you.

call AirBerlin 866 266 5588 (dom. free call)*

Depending on the fare category booked, flights can be rebooked and/or the passenger’s name changed while the ticket is valid (365 days). This can be done by calling our Service Centre ».

You can cancel your check-in here »

JustFly fare: It is not possible to rebook flights in the JustFly fare category.

FlyClassic fare / Saver fare booked before 22.05.2012: rebookings can be made by telephone or at the ticket desk up to the time stated in the booking confirmation for the ticket in question or as published online at www.airberlin.com/checkin. When rebooking, the difference between the original fare and the new fare is payable, if this is higher; if a flight is rebooked to one with a lower fare, then the difference between the original and the lower fare will not be refunded. >>>1. If I have tickets and reservations for a train and I miss the train can I just rebook the reservations? <<<

No. Read the info again "reservation change allowed BEFORE departure".

>>>2. If I had a rail pass do I just walk on to any train that doesn't require reservations? For example the L. E. out of Fiumicino? Or on the Circumvesuviana line from Naples to Sorrento?<<<

Only a 1st class rail pass is good on the Leonardo Express and is not good on the Circumvesuviana at all.

>>>Buy a railpass (from my buddy Rick Steves - pretty good price) but don't buy the reservation until we know which train we're taking ... how 'bouts that?<<<

Rick is a reseller so I can't imagine he would be cheaper than buying from RailEurope.

>>>My buddy Rick Steves says summer train travel is dicy - very crowded and sometimes trains are booked. Is my boy daft? <<<

Yes, he's daft.

>>>Ok, what about this? Buy a railpass (hold on, hold on ... I know you guys hate railpasses ... just let me finish.)<<<

Without knowing your itinerary, it's hard to say whether you would waste money buying a pass, but it's very likely since you are only in Italy about 10 days.

>>>3. My dad, 83 years old, keeps pressing me to book 1st class. I've read some stuff about there's more reliable air conditioning (travel in July), reservation don't sell out and there's more luggage space but, man, the price difference. If you are reading this on Rick Steves, you really need to quite reading him. Between Rome and Naples on the fast train, you would have AC no matter what class you booked (there are six possible class situations on this train). Travel time is 70 minutes and 2nd class is more roomy/comfortable than coach on an airplane. You barely have time to get settled before you are in Naples. This is what 2nd class looks like on this train.

If you buy a pass, you would have to pay $13 for each seat reservation (mandatory on all, but the slow R trains). Usually you can buy tickets cheaper from Trenitalia which include your seat.

For arrival day, you need to also consider Italorail as they have a lot of discounts that day (20€). Their trains are new (the company is just two years old) and they use Rome's Tiburtina station, not Termini. You would take the local train (FR1 - 8€)from the airport, not the Leonardo Express.

Railpasses are not good on Italorail.

Dear Kybourbon,

It's amazing how much an old dog can learn! Thanks for all the info. I ended up changing my flight to arrive in Naples instead of Rome - saves us one train ride. I'm not going to do a railpass. I will book on the Frecciarossa out of Naples to Firenze as my sister and husband will be coming from Fiumicino that day and meeting up with us on that train. The Italo was about the same price, assigned seats rather than let you pick and it would be more convenient for my sis to go to Termini than Tiburtina. Lets see, what else ... I hope yo're not disappointed in me but I am still going to book 1st class. It will make my dad happy and that's more important than saving a few bucks.

If you are now arriving Naples airport, you want to take the Curreri shuttle bus (10€) from the airport to Sorrento.
