IDP needed or not? Help

I am renting a car in Milan and driving to Como and Tuscany area. Do I need an IDP permit for Italy? The rental car company did not mention it, but several travel sites said it was necessary. One even mentioned fines if stopped. Anyone encountered this?

The rental car company doesn't require an IDP, but Italy and its traffic police do. An IDP is easy and cheap to get at your local AAA/CAA office, about $20 including photo. And it's good to have in case of traffic stop, accident, etc. Be sure to bring your regular license as well.

"<i>Italy and its traffic police do.</i>" . . . and since it is a legal requirement in Italy, if you have a problem, your insurance could (and probably will be) voided.

Just get one to avoid problems. We were required to show it with our rental car in Austria.
