Idle musings - Venice hotel for a 3 day stay?

I'm going back to London in October for a 49ers game at Wembly. I was kicking around some ideas and thought I might fly into Venice for 3 nights before heading up to London (or Milan for 1 night and Venice for 2 nights - depending on airfares)

I've only been to Venice once years ago so it will be like a new destination for me. If you we're to choose one 'best-est' hotel for 2 or 3 nights for up to €200-ish max single, which which would it be?

Views are good - restaurants on site not a major plus. Service more important than decor. Close to San Marco or Rialto a major plus.

This doesn't meet all of your criteria, but we found it to be one of the most pleasant Venice lodgings we've had in several visits going back to the 70's..Ponte Mocenigo, a restored Venetian mansion...short level walk from San Stae vap stop... almost hidden, narrow pathway to the green side door. Located on a very narrow canal. Close to Al Zucca the popular resto favored by many Fodorites, Rialto Bridge is also "easy walking" close, as is the busy main fish market, Mercato Pescado.

The staff, headed by Sandro, one of the young owners, is attentive in every way. Breakfast on ther patio facing the small canal is quite complete...no other meals available. Check their web pages...if I recall, the rates for doubles ran somewhat less than 200 euros, two-and-a-half years ago.

Question: will the 49'ers be wearing football or futbol shoes?
Have a nice visit..and I DO hope the 49'ers cream whomever they're playing!

Looks great Stu. Unfortunately I just checked and they are almost totally booked up for October. None of my dates are available

Janisj,

I also love Hotel al Ponte Mocenigo and have stayed there a few times. I did not stay there on my last visit because the website showed it was booked. Then, during my visit I ran into Sandro and he said to always send an email query as well since sometimes the website does not have the latest info regarding availability. On the other hand, they have become very popular so availability may be limited.

Thanks - It is a little early to be booking since I have a couple of other ideas swirling around. I will probably bite the bullet and decide by the end of June. But I'll keep that in mind to contact them directly and not necessarily rely on the website.

It looks like a lovely place . . .

We have enjoyed the Ca dei Conti located on a little canal not far from San Marco.

JanisJ:
I was told the same thing by Sandro re emailing him.
Hope you can get in. After all, both Ellenem and I can't be dead wrong, right? Please keep us informed about your final plans.

Who are the 49'ers playing at Wembley?

I just checked on another place we stayed back in '93. I had heard they have gone to 4-star, renovated and upped the rates. Great location across from the Custons Tower on the Grand Canal..very comfortable walk to San Marcos on the broad Fondamente...Hotel Bucintoro...just for future search, but may now be too far beyond your budget (mine, too! though my overseas days are sadly over due to my dear wife's incapacitation.)

We stayed at the Marconi in "00. It is just 3 buildings down from the Rialto Bridge but was surprisingly quiet and yet wonderfully centrally located. We paid ~200 Dollars for our double room and ~150 for our son's single, but that was before the euro......I noticed that what we had paid in dollars later became the price in euros and even more! However, we liked it a lot and it has been recommended here by others. I have not looked at the prices recently.....

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like I might need to up my budget a bit to stay in those areas but I really didn't want to pay €300.

Didn't see your other posts - yes, I don't generally (like never ) do tours in the UK but Timberbush is really good. Been around for years.

Keith and I are staying at Palazzo Cendon near Tre Archi and the Gate of the Jewish Ghetto.

We like this area because it is close to Lista di Spagna, but yet far enough from the Maddening Crowd to be quiet.

janisj- We stayed at the Corte 1321 B&B in San Polo. It was marvelous. Great location, excellent rooms and bathrooms. Breakfast served in a beautiful green courtyard when the weather is nice- brought to your room if the weather is not cooperative.

Small place, American owners. Five minutes walk to vaporetto, 8 to Rialto bridge. http://www.corte1321.com/en/description.htm

When we were most recently in Venice, last October, we stayed at ca Bragadin e Carabba, a small inn with rooms facing Campo Santa Marina. The location is great, close by San Marco but quiet. We elected to have continental breakfast, served in our room, so we could people-watch out into the Campo. There's a nice little bacaro nearby, full of Italians in the evenings.

We stayed at Locanda Orseolo, off San Marco but inside a quiet courtyard. Personalized service (made sure all staff know your name and greet you by your name), fantastic breakfast and beautiful rooms. And if you are taking a water taxi to the airport, you can board right at the door...no need to drag your luggage into the streets and bridges to the taxi stand. Highly recommend!
