ideas for trip to UK with 11 year old son

We live in Germany and I am planning on taking my 11 year old son to some place in the UK for a long 4 day weekend. He is kind of tired of the typical musuems and churches and he has been to London 2 years ago. Any suggestions on where to take him in the UK for a long weekend? His request is an english speaking country for the weekend sooo I need some ideas, he loves science and math and tennis. thanks!

What else interests him? Castles, history, sporting events, whatever? Also - when will you be traveling?

One place that comes immediately to mind would be Edinburgh. Amazing castle/history etc. Also places like Stirling or Linlithgow are an easy day trip by train.

Or maybe York - Medieval city wall, amazing railroad museum, Jorvik Viking centre, and while it is a museum --I have never known a child that didn't LOVE the York Castle Museum. One of the best in the country.

Halifax is not too far from York and has the Eureka museum, alternativley the Magma centre in Rotherham might be interesting. If an art lover have a look at the west yorkshire sculpture park. Too dull well there is a steam train in the North York Moors to the North of York

If he's not dead set against revisiting London, you might check to see if he is at all tempted by these London offerings:

Wimbledon has a tennis museum

and there is also the Royal Institution

and the Science Museum in London

If London is definitely out, Edinburgh also has this whizbang science-minded museum

If not London I was also going to recommend York. Railways, castles, vikings...

If not London, then Glasgow has fab science centre right on the River Clyde with great views across the City and one of the best best Planetatiums (Planetaria?) in the world...

If you are visiting after April 2011 then the fab new tramsport museum will be open

Nearby is the Glasgow tall ship

And up in Kelvingrove Park is the Kelvingrove Museum (free)
which has lots of interactive kids stuff
