Ideas for late December destination?

Each year my children get a winter break from school that is at least 2 weeks in length. We like to celebrate Christmas at home, but would have time to take a European trip after the holiday. We don't ski, but aren't really thinking of a beach destination either.

Can you suggest destinations - preferably in Europe - that would be nice to visit the week after Christmas? Decent weather and low crowds would be a plus.

"Decent weather" in Dec and January is pretty iffy in most of the northern hemisphere. I was going to suggest London, Paris, oVenice, or Rome, but they can be cold and it might very well rain.

I haven't been there, but Spain is alsooften suggested for that time of year.

I visited Prague in January once and can highly recommend it for a winter trip.

It snowed while I was there, which just added to the beauty of the place - and it was almost tourist-free.

But maybe snow isn't your idea of decent weather ;)

For that you might have to head for the Canary islands ...

Hi,

Have you considered Cairo, Egypt?

I would hop a plane to Nice and the Côte d'Azur and enjoy all the decorations and festivities that will still be going on. The weather can be cold, but then it can be quite pleasant--and there's plenty to do and see either way. When we were there in December 2001 the weather was springlike the entire week. Winter is not tourist season in Provence; so you wouldn't need to worry about the crowds of summer.
