Ideas for itinerary in late May for family of four

We are planning on going to Europe in late May this year. We're getting a late start on planning. The kids are 18 and 20. Our plan is to be there for 8-10 days. My initial thought is visiting two cities with one train trip in the middle to go to the second destination. As a family, our only European trip was to London. I'm looking of suggestions and am open to any combination except London. I would prefer to keep the trip somewhat reasonably priced so have not included Switzerland or the nordic countries as options. My initial thoughts were Barcelona, Prague or maybe Munich paired with a second city. We are looking for something centered around exploring the city with possible day trips to nearby attractions.

I would love to hear any ideas before we make a final decision.

Thank you

I think way too broad a question for an answer. Museums, hiking, food, nightlife.

So as I understand it: one main city ands then heading out to another which would be close by?

My choice would be Prague and Vienna.

Yep, Prague and Vienna, or maybe Paris - Brussels - Amsterdam. Hard to know, your question is just so open.
