Ideas for Day Trip from Venice
 

Would love to learn some Day Trip ideas from Venice. (6 people going) We'll be spending a few days in Venice, and could use some Day Trip options for anyone who might wish to explore while in that area.<BR><BR>Thank you so much.

Day trips from Venice are not the most practucal idea in the world, but you probably already know that. In spite of that statement, if you have someone in your party who wants to give it a try, these are the most interesting and most accessible destinations, using train service from Venice:<BR>-Verona, certainly the best<BR>-Padua, great old town & cathedral<BR>-Vicenza, much overlooked but incredible Palladian architecture<BR>-Villa Pasani, at Stra just east of Padua<BR>-La Rotonda, at Abano Terme just west of Padua<BR>-Chioggia, with canals and water just south of Venice (can go by boat or train)<BR>That ought to be enough to choose from.<BR>Enjoy your trip.

Laura: If you enjoy antiquities, Aquileia is just fabulous. It was a major Roman port city and the ruins are from the 1st century. There is a Romanesque Basilica from the 11th century with some of the most incredible mosaics I have seen anywhere in Europe. The entire floor of the basilica is a mosaic. Beautiful! It is an easy drive (about sixty miles from Venice). Take the local road for a glimpse at some neat villages and lots of farm country with a view of the coast never very far away. Takes about three hours to tour Aquleia which would leave you enough time to drive down the penninsula to Grado (another twelve miles), an old fishing village for lunch or dinner. As you appraoch Grado, be sure to go right into the old city. If you go left, you will go into a resorty, modern city. The basilica St. Eufemia (in the old city) also has a mosaic floor and is from the 6th century. The baslica St. Maria is also of mosaic floor and from the 5th century.<BR>Another option would be Bassano Del Grappa (about thirty-five miles from Venice)and (close by) my favorite little North Italian hilltown, Asolo (about another ten miles). Bassano Del Grappo is more about a lovely, charming village rather than specific monuments, although, the covered bridge over the river Brenta goes back to the 13th century and is certainly noteworthy. Wander the town to see the porticoed 16th century houses. Asolo is just one of the most charming little villages you will ever see. It was made important by the wealthy merchants who built villas here and you can see them everywhere in very good repair. Hike up to the old Roman Fort for awsome views of the valley. Again, a good place for lunch or dinner. Have a great time.

I've said it ebfore and will say it again. I think that day trips FROM Venice are a poor use of time and money. See Venice for 36, 60 hours or more, and then relocate to somewhere else in the Veneto to see other things in the Veneto.<BR><BR>Day tripping out of, and back into Venice costs you an hour each direction just to get from your hotel to Mestre. Verona is a great town for shopping. And, you can visit Romeo & Juliet's famous balcony.

We enjoyed a day trip to the outer islands of Burano, Murano and Torcello. Burano was my favourite, quite touristy but so colourful! An easy day, lunch on one, coffe on another and dinner on the last one then home to Venice proper.<BR>Kay
