We found Borthwick Castle (a stone's throw south of Edinburgh) a very memorable spot. A web search should locate their website. You would need a car to get there.

Two lovely places that we stayed at a couple of years ago were Kinfauns Castle not far from Edinburgh and Glenelg Inn on the mainland across from Skye. Kinfauns Castle will certainly pamper you but the food at Glenelg was superb.

Stobo Castle in Peebles-shire; skibo in Easter Ross, Cameron House on Loch Lomond; Gleneagles in Perthshire.

My personal choice would be somewhere smaller. How about Ardeonaig on Loch Awe?

Oops. Too early in the morning, too little coffee yet. I meant Ardanaiseig on Loch Awe.

Ardeonaig is on Loch Tay. Well off the beaten track, supposed to be excellent food, but, I suspect little pampering beyond good service.

Skibo for sure - but VERY pricey. Gleneagles is world class - alsy Turnberry.

My choices would be any of 3 or 4 on Skye or Cameron House.

Cameron House is right on Loch Lomond, has a wonderful spa and activities center, a great restaurant. The scenery isn't as magnificent as farther north in the highlands - but sitting out on the lawn watching the moon rise over the Loch or walking along Duck Bay are really wonderful.

Here is an unknown place...

Woodston Fishing Station B&B just outside of St Cyrus (south of Aberdeen).

Sits on a cliff overlooking the north sea with a wildlife refuge on one side and a nice walk down to a rarely used beach. Follow the beach just a shorth distance north to a beautiful waterfall. Make sure it's low tide though or you may have to swim back. If it's a full moon (I don't think it will be then), you'll NEVER forget the place. The St Cyrus Hotel has great food just up the road.

Bill

Kildrummy Castle Hotel, which is up just east of Aberdeen a ways. Very nice hotel, wonderful food, truly cannot stay enough good about it!

Thanks to everyone for your prompt & excellent ideas. We have booked Loch Lomond this time, but will be trying out the other suggestions as soon as I get another babysitter organized!!!!!!!!!
