Just an update, for whomever is interested.

We decided to take our next European trip to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. Our focus is on Prague, Budapest and as much of the countryside as we can reasonably fit in. (I'd love to visit Austria (revisit for us adults), Germany and Poland too, but we can't do it all...)

We decided on these destinations based on our interests in history, art (especially smaller, more focussed museums) and castles (the older the better). The cities sound like great places to visit museums, castles and hang out people-watching, as well as castles in the countryside. The area generally has an interesting place in history (which I realized during my research), including the more recent years.

In terms of being more active, we decided that the cultural stuff wins out for us (though the amount of walking we do in cities is probably more than most people, so we're in the "more active" category already). Though I'm definitely seeking out locations where we can do some walking/hiking, maybe TO the castles (like we did to see the Cathar castles in the Languedoc area of France). Partly this is because we live in an area of the U.S. that is not big on culture and museums, doesn't have a huge amount of recorded history, and has a huge amount of natural mountain beauty (Denver). We spend almost every weekend during the summer hiking or biking in the mountains, so doing that kind of stuff on our vacation isn't as high on our list.

And of course, all the other places we considered are still on the list for future trips (and I have quite a lot of notes on those areas already, due to your advice and my research).

Thank you all!
