Don't know if anyone has noticed, but SNCF has been advertising another means of transportation: iDBUS. What caught my attention especially is that there is bus service between Aix, Marseille and Nice and Milan and Genoa. There are frequently questions here about traveling from the south of France into Italy by train and the difficulty figuring out schedules and booking tickets. Maybe this bus service offers an alternative.

What a horrible thought - long distance travel in a bus!
It's easy enough to take the train, and cheap too if you pre-book, the rick is simply to split the booking like this:
1) Starting in Avignon or Marseille, book a train to Ventimiglia (on the border, where the Italian trains start) at the FRENCH Railways website www.voyages-sncf.com (ignore the 'Choose your country' popup and select 'Other Countries (EUR)' top right, then select France as your ticket collection country). Tickets either print-at-home e-tickets or collect-at-station.
If you're starting in Nice, simply buy a €7 local train ticket at the station and hop on the next every-30-minute local train to Ventimiglia, journey time 48 minutes or so.
2) Pre-book a ticket from Ventimiglia to Milan, Pisa, Rome, Florence, Venice or wherever at the ITALIAN Railways website www.trenitalia.com, from just €19. In most cases it'll be a print-at-home ticket.

This would be great for Nice/Genoa. You don't have to change buses like you do with the train (or worry with luggage since it's stored underneath). It's also cheaper than the train (only 19€) and travel time is about the same.
The other routes don't seem very helpful. Some seem to take a pretty long time.
