ID requirements for Bus reservation on Alsa and Movelia web sites

Does anyone knows what are the ID/Passport requirements on the web site for the reservation. The Movelia site says for security to enter a letter of NIC card? Do you know what they mean? I've tried to call, but did not get English speaking operator. Did you give the driver license or passport number or just a letters in the number? Please help.

When I booked my bus ticket on Alsa website, I entered my passport # (a combination of letters and numbers). The bus driver asked for my passport for ID before I was let on the bus (it was an e-ticket print out).

They mean we Spaniards have an ID card with a number and a letter at the end. They ask to put the letter also (sometimes it is not need, and it's enough with the number).

Thanks a lot, guys. So for US travellers does it means passport only, or american driver license number can be used as well?

I think passport is probably the safer thing to use as an ID. People in Spain may not recognize a US drivers license and may not think it's a valid ID.
