Iceland Snaefellnes itinerary
 

We have a two wheel drive vehicle and want to explore the Snaefellnes peninsula as a day trip from Reykjavik this August. Does anyone have any intinerary recommendations and must do? We are anticipating a long day and would like to have a balance between seeing a good ount of land and being able to get out and explore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

we didn't have much luck exploring the countryside in that region as by the time we got there, it was raining hard. Also by August most of the accessible glacier has gone, or it had the year we were there.

However we did enjoy a whale watching trip out of Husavik [though you can do this from Reykjavik] and exploring Styykisholmur.

I'd have a look at the icelandic tourist board website and also those of the few big hotels in that area to see what they recommend.

I went in March (during an all weather day with every form of precipitation alternating at least twice, plus sunshine). I LOVED the Snaefellsness, easily my favorite part of 10 days in Iceland, and the insane climate conditions might have even improved my overall experience

I took a day tour, but I wish I had gone for two nights. I'd recommend:

Kirkjufell - probably the most photographed formation in Iceland, even with a small possibility of northern lights, makes for a nice stop for photographs

Eldborg - large lava field, good to hike around and up some jagged mini hills, some red volcanic sand deposits around

Budir - if you make a few stops on the way from Reykjavik, you can plan to eat lunch at Hotel Budir, which of course is an option to stay at as well (in the winter, we had a most filling bowl of cream of paprika soup there): the dining area windows look out over the beach there. There's cool coastal dune hiking and nice views there, along with the iconic black church of Budir that always features in photography

Arnarstapi and Hellnar - avoid if you are afraid of birds, but the craggy cliffs along the path between these two tiny villages are fun to walk/hike, and numerous kittiwakes, skua and artic tern are interesting to watch and listen to amidst the crashing waves on the cliffs: beautiful natural scenery here

Other places we didn't make it to were Djúpalónssandu and Berserkjahrau. There was a beautiful little lake not far from Kirkjufell that we stopped at to watch seals, if I can figure out exactly the name I will reply again.

On the way there or back from Reykjavik or wherever you are coming from and going to, you could also visit some waterfalls (Hraunfoss, Barnafoss) to the west of Borganes.

Not much to add - a day trip around Snæfellsness is manageable from Reykjavik but it will be a long day and a lot of driving. Try and leave as early as you can and you can do the whole peninsula with time for a few stops. There are numerous places where you can stop and enjoy the scenery..although I doubt you´ll have much time for hiking. Arnastapi is a must..Stykkisholmur is a beautiful town (not that many in Iceland) with some fantastic restaurants..but you may not have enough time depending on what you want to do. This should help.
