Iceland Ring Road Itinerary- March 2024
 

Hello! My husband and I are planning a trip to Iceland in March 2024, where we plan to travel the Ring Road. I've created a rough itinerary, but just wanted to get some advice from others that may have traveled the Ring Road, especially in March, as I know the weather/terrain can be difficult to drive in during this time.

Day 1- Arrive at KEF

• Stay in Reykjavik
  

Day 2- Reykjavik

• Explore
  
• Blue Lagoon
  
• Stay in Reykjavik
  

Day 3- Drive from Reykjavik to Vik

• Planned stops at: Seljalandsfoss & Skogafoss
  
• Stay in Vik (AirBnB close to the Black Sand Beach)
  

Day 4- Vik

• I read there are a lot of different things around the area, so figured we just explore around
  

Day 5- Drive from Vik to Hofn

• Jokulsarlon- Diamond Beach/Glacier Bay
  
• Stay in Hofn
  

Day 6- Skaftafell

• Blue Ice Cave Hike
  
• Stay in Hofn
  

Day 7- Hofn to Egilsstadir

• Stops at: Seydisfjordur, Henigfoss, Lunch in Sjupivogur
  
• Stay in Egilsstadir
  

Day 8- Egilsstadir to Akureyri

• Stops at: Hverir & Dettifoss (west side)
  
• Stay in Akureyri
  

Day 9-Akureyri

• Whale Watching Tour in Dalvik
  
• Stay in Akureyri
  

Day 10-Drive from Akureyri to Grundafjordur

• Any recommend stops? I know it's a longer drive
  
• Stay in Grundarfjordur
  

Day 11: Drive from Grundafjordur to Reykjavik

• Stops at: Kirkjufellsfoss, Saxholl Crater, and Arnarstapi
  
• Stay in Reykjavik
  

Day 12: Fly home from KEF



Does this seem doable? Are there any recommendations for stops to add or remove? We will be going March 15th-26th.

I was there in March of this year. The south had no snow and dry roads. The north was completely different, as the deep snow caused some roads to be impassable.

I did the whale watching and we never saw a single whale, but of course that's never a guarantee. I would like to caution you about the black sand beach. Do not go near the water and do not turn your back to the ocean. We were told that many tourists die at that beach because it's notorious for rogue waves. I still say not to miss it, just stand back and enjoy the view.

Watch the internet for the Northern Lights forecast. It's beyond spectacular.
