Which city? Reykjavik? Most of the city is walkable really, so it probably doen't make a lot of difference - but for most of the attractions in Iceland, you'll need to get out of town altogether in any case.

We went to Iceland (again) on Jan 2006. We stayed at Hotel Odinsve http://www.hotelodinsve.is/. This is a small nice hotel about 2 blocks from the main street. Great well known chef's restaurant (expensive). The hotel was almost empty in January and so were most other hotels in Reykjavik. I called them about 3 weeks prior to arrival and managed to "squeeze" a really nice rate.
Romm with a View is also very centrally located and very reasonably priced. http://www.roomwithaview.is/index_en.php
The only problem for us with this place was that it has no parking and we had a rented car. I would stay there without hesitation if parking is no issue.

we recently returned after a 10 day trip. We rented a car ( four wheel drive) and had no trouble parking. The parking is free until 10 am during the week and you do not pay again until after six at night. We left the hotel by 9 or earlier and never returned before 6pm. I forget the Free times on Saturday ( I think that the pay time starts later in the day). There is no fee on Sunday. We stayed at the Hotel Borg. It is georgouus but only take a room that is in the "old" building facing the square in the front. The new section is not as nice. The room in the back of the hotel face a bar and the noise begins about 1am and continues till 5 or 6 am. It was in walking distance to everything. We also went to the east and stayed at the Hotel Hofn. Our room faced the ocean with an unobstructed view. If you eat at their restaurant do not order fish...way over cooked. Have a great time!

As some of the other posters have already said, the centre of Reykjavik is easily walkable, so for hotels, it basically comes down to budget and personal taste.

I'd heartily recommend Hotel 101 (if you don't mind mortgaging your first-born) and the hotel Thingholt if your budget doesn't stretch that far.

Both are really friendly, very well designed and central so easy to stagger back to after a night on the tiles.

I'm heading back out there in about six weeks (for the Iceland Airwaves festival) and will be staying at the hotel Thingholt for the second time...

i stayed at the luna hotel apartments.

wonderful- kitchette- was able to cook bfast and a few lunches.

we were only there for a long weekend- F to S.

went to blue lagoon one day. the other day we went on a coach tour which took us up on a glacier and then snowmobiling. it was really different and awsome. stopped at a few waterfalls. neither myself nor my boyfriend are package tour people, but we thought for such a short trip- planned day trips were a must.

I just returned from a 12 Day trip just a few weeks ago. Stayed the whole time in Reykjavik at Hotel Fron. It was very nice and on the main shopping street. We took day tours almost everyday with either Iceland Excursions or a private tour guide. Iceland was amazing.

This is a wonderful message board...I've learned quite a bit about Iceland...my husband and I are about to book our trip for June 08...we're using a travel agent for the flights and rooms...we are going to book one of the super jeep day trips...we are going to stay in Reykjavik as we are only going to be there for 5 days...how is the bus system? We are thinking of going to the Golden Circle..any other suggestions for day trips and how to travel...can you rent a car for just a day? Any advice will be appreciated...Thanks, Mary

You can rent a car for the day and the Golden Circle route makes for a nice full day trip from Reykjavik. In June, you will have plenty of daylight. The driving and navigation of the route are not at all difficult.

I second the Hotel Fron. We stayed there for only one night a year and a half ago and were happily impressed.
