Iceland - Ferries to Arctic Circle in Iceland at Grimsey
 

I am trying to assess if I can do a return day trip from Stykkisholmur to Grimsey / Arctic Circle. It would appear it might be about a 4 1/2 hour trip to Akureyri and then another (?) to Arctic Circle.

Alternatively I can travel from Reykjavik to Akureyri in one day (not sure of length of time / ease of drive)?? and go to Stykkisholmur the next day, although this may mean missing out on a Flatey Island trip.

Of course I'm assuming a trek to the Arctic Circle and through Akureyri would be worth it...

All comments / thoughts are welcome!

I can only comment from my experience and having been driven (part of a minibus trip) we drove between Reykjavik and Akureyri in a day but it was an extremely slow and uncomfortable trip due to the road conditions and not one I would recommend so if you have alternative plans that are easier these may be best. PS - 'm assuming you're talking about during the summer and not winter?

may I ask how ths fits into your trip, and what you hope to see/accomplish?

i only ask, as the more obvious trip from Stykkisholmur is to Baldur on the southern coast of the western fjords, Flatley being about half-way across.

we did the trip in the opposite direction and frankly didn't think that it amounted to much; however, the western fjords were the hightlight of our trip. it is about a 2 hour drive to the very western tip where all the puffins and guillimots nest on the cliffs, but they are quite spectacular and well worth the joint-jolting trek.

the ferry ride, especially the bit before we got to Flatley, was one of the best I've done - we were accompanied by literally hundreds of puffins flying across the surface of the sea, plus loads of other birds. [the next day we did a whale watching trip and saw a pod of killer whales, so you might get lucky on the ferry!]

oops - I meant that it was Flatley that we weren't over -impressed by, not the ferry trip.
