Iceland Car Rental Suggestions

Hi - I am doing a 5 day layover in Iceland in May 2015. There are so many horror stories about car rental companies-- I am hoping that I can get some feedback from someone who has recently visited and had a successful experience renting a car.

I also read that the touristy places (along the golden circle) should not require a 4x4. Please let me know if you have heard otherwise.

Thank you!
Nicole

Not recently but...Rented from SIXT in Iceland 2013 summer. No complaints except for the airport pickup. Get very specific details about how/when/ who picks you up at the airport to drive you to the rental office. We did have to wait long and were almost losing hope.
But other than that - no complaints ....

This summer (August-September) we booked a car at Reykjavik Cars
(www.reykjavikcars.com) - took it from Keflavic airport and dropped it there after two fantastic weeks. No problems at all.

Unless you are planning on travelling on mountain roads (F-Roads) you will not need a 4WD, and the vast majority of the popular tourist spots (including the Golden Circle) are easily accessible with a small 2WD. When planning your itinerary just check that none of the destinations involve travel on an F-Road, 2WD vehicles are banned from driving on such roads.

For car rentals I use Iceland cars www.icelandcars.com and have always found them to be excellent value.
