Iceland Advice

DH and I are looking at spending about a week in Iceland in the first week of June. Our primary interest is outdoors activities - hiking, kayaking, biking, etc. Any recommendations on where to base ourselves? We don't want to spend a lot of time driving, and so will likely concentrate on one area of the island. Feeling a bit overwhelmed with the choices at the moment. If we can do it without renting a car even better. We're happy to take public transport if available.

hi laurajae,

the best plave we found for these sorts of activites was near Gulfoss run by www.articrafting.is. DH & DS spent a day rafting with them last summer and had a great time, but they do other stuff like kayaking, walking on glaciers and even canyoning too.

there is plenty to see in this area - the geysirs at geysir, the tectonic plates at thingvellir, and the falls at Gulfoss plus glaciers, mount Hekla, and it's easily accessible by public transport. there is even a camp site at Geysir, acconoding to my lonely planet guide.

just remember to take your eye-shades so you can sleep in the midnight sun,

regards, ann
