Iceland - 3 days with 2 adult kids
 

Going to Iceland with husband and 2 adult kids (20's) at the end of June. Only have 3 days. Thoughts? Ideas? Not to be missed (besides blue lagoon and golden circle - tho, should we drive the circle or take a tour?) Thanks.

the golden circle is VERY easy to drive. what we did was to drive there in the morning, then spend the rest of the day exploring Pingvelir with the gorge between the texctonic plates [you can walk between them] and the site of the ancient Parliament. then we went up to look at the geysers on our way to our accommodation. then in the morning, we went to Gulfoss to see the waterfall, which is very spectacular, and then back to the Geysers cos' DS [then 17!] was obsessed with them.

as we had longer than you, [10 days] we then had a long drive up to the Western Fjords which will be too far for you, sadly, but you could go and look at the Snaefellnes peninsular, and spend another night there, or go to Hekla to look at the glacier, or alternatively, go south to Vik.

you could also do white water rafting near Pingvelir [try google, I've lost the link, sorry] and in June [which is a bit earlier than we went] you may be able to do some glacier tours.

one drawback of Iceland is that although the major sights are spectacular, the bits in bwtween can be a bit, well, dull, and the roads are not the fastest. but you shoudl find plenty to amuse you all in 3 days.

I would drive the Golden Circle, because then you can stay longer in places that a tour might hurry you through (e.g. Geysir), and avoid places where they might want you to linger (e.g. 'Eden'). Any decent guidebook will give you what you need to know, and the roads are well-marked.

Some folks plan on going to the Blue Lagoon and the Reykjanes Peninsula on their way to Keflavik when they fly out.

If I had 3 days, I would spend the better part of one of them driving along the south coast, at least as far as Vik. You can visit some great waterfalls and the beautiful coastal features near Vik. You could also consider taking a snowmobile tour out onto the Vatnajokul glacier.

Do check out rental car prices ASAP.When I was planning our family vacation last year the prices for a week were almost $2500 which made us rethink our trip.

I really enjoyed Thorvald (Thor's Woods), too; you can do this as a daytrip but probably wouldn't want to drive it as you have to occasionally ford glacier streams.
