iceland 12 days road trip itinerary
 

Hi everyone!

I'd love to get some feedback on the iceland road trip itinerary I've prepared for this upcoming June-July. I know this itinerary is a bit idealistic and needs some work (and also, i might need to choose between westfjords vs snaefellsness) and I badly need your tips/suggestions!:)

Day 1 - arrive 1:25pm at Keflavik -> Thingvellir / Golden Circle -> stay at Selfoss area
Day 2 - Vik -> glacier walk & boat at Jokulsarlon -> stay at Jokulsarlon area
Day 3 - snowmobile -> Hofn -> stay at Egilsstadir
Day 4 - Myvatn -> stay at Akureyri
Day 5 - whale watching at Dalvik -> stay at Hvammstangi
Day 6 - Latrabjarg / Dynjandi -> stay at Flokalundur or somewhere near (?)
Day 7 - car ferry Baldur to Stykkisholmur -> stay at Hellnar / Arnarstapi
Day 8 - drive to Thingvellir -> stay at Thingvellir
Day 9 - snorkeling at Silfra
*2 extra days -> where do I add this?
Day 12 - stay at Reykjavik
Day 13 - depart

Some questions:
1) Which area would you skip? Snaefellsnes or Westfjords?
2) We're thinking of using a 2WD (still thinking if regular car or camper van...), what areas in my itinerary would I not be able to access with a 2WD?

Just a few thoughts based on my planning (we'll go in July):

1) why don't you combine day 1 and 8-9? Spend days 1-2 in the area, then move on, so then you'll have 3 extra days to play with. 12-13 days is a good time for a full circle.

2) day 6 is a lot of driving, you might want to revisit

3) Are you camping? If not, and if you haven't booked accommodations yet, availability will be the decisive factor in where you spend the night

4) I think all your itinerary is ok with a 2WD, but we're only doing the south and the west (yes, in a 2WD)

Day 2 - snorkeling -> Geysir / Gullfoss -> Kerid -> Seljalandsfoss / Skogafoss -> stay near Skogafoss
Day 3 - Thorsmork super jeep tour -> reynisfjara -> stay at Vik
Day 4 - Skaftafell / Svartifoss -> glacier hiking -> jokulsarlon -> stay near Jokulsarlon
Day 5 - snowmobile (optional) -> Jokulsarlon boat ride -> Djupivogur -> Egilsstadir -> Seydifjordur (optional) -> stay at Egilsstadir
Day 6 - Hengifoss (optional) -> Dettifoss / Selfoss -> stay at Myvatn
Day 7 - Myvatn -> Godafoss -> stay at Akureyri
Day 8 - whale watching at Dalvik -> stay at Hvammstangi
Day 9 - Dynjandi -> Latrabjarg -> stay at Patreksfjordur
Day 10 - Patreksfjordur -> Raudasandur -> ferry to Stykkisholmur -> stay at Stykkisholmur
Day 11 - Snaefellsnes -> stay at Reykjavik
Day 12 - Reykjavik
Day 13 - depart

I badly need comments on my revised itinerary! Thanks in advance!

Do these areas require 4 WD to access them?
