Ice Hotel

In the Fodor's Scandinavia book, you mention an Ice Hotel.

Where is it and what is the name?

Thank you so much.

Checked my frommer's guide and nothing in Scandinavia but in Switzerland there is the Ice Palace which is caverns in a glacier that you visit with a guide. You know you can e mail Fodor directly and ask them. I will keep searching for you

No luck-Fodors has a hotel finder but to use it I at least need a city the hotel is in. A country would be nice too. Scandinavia is too broad.

Susan--I went into another travel forum (15 travel boards) www.eurotrip.com--there was a great exchange in "Places" between a woman going to Finland and a girl that lives there. The girl that lives there is very excited to have people interested in Scandinavia and is very helpful and wants people to ask her questions. Here is her e-mail- [email protected].

I hope you have warm blood. The Jukkasjarvi Ice Hotel is in Swedish Lapland.

This hotel is rebuilt every December out of 1000 tons of ice and 2000 tons of snow, and in May it melts away.

It houses a church, hotel, gallery, golf room, cinema and a bar.

Temperatures remain about 35 degrees Fahrenheit inside the hotel.

To get there by air, it's about 1.5 hours from Stockholm to Kiruna. Jukkasjarvi is about .5 hours from Kiruna.

I saw a nice article on this within the last two years in Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

Susan, There was a great article in Conde Nast, but the same information is available online by searching Alta Vista with the keywords Ice Hotel + Sweden.... From what the article in Cande Nast said it is rebuilt every October and melts away in the late spring. Apon arrival at the airport you take an hour and a half dogsled ride to the hotel. Every thing is made of ice beds, glasses at the ice bar etc.... I am thinking of going for Christmas as I will be close and would love to see it... A bit cold for even me but... it looks spectacular in the photos...Hope you find the infor you are looking for..
